schlosrat
I've been playing around with fairings, and it seems like they just don't affect aerodynamic forces - or at least don't to the extent you might expect. I built a large rover based on the Bulldog cockpit with rottweiler truck chassis and RoveMax TR-2L wheels (similar to the stock one, but with much smaller wheels than that monster). It's not a very aerodynamic thing all the same, but I attempted to launch it on an LV that would ordinarily be easily able to loft that much payload. No good - the thing tipped over no matter how gentle I was with the gravity turn, so I encased it in a fairing... It seems to be tipping just as badly, or perhaps almost just as badly. If the fairing is helping at all, it's not doing much other than trying to look pretty. Edited March 4, 2023 by schlosrat
Kaa253
I have been testing fairings. Fairings usually do make a significant reduction in drag. They are not just cosmetic, as I have seen stated in many places in the forums. However, I have found at least one part that seems to negate the effect of having fairings completely. Do you have any OX-4L solar panels on your rover? What happens if you replace those with OX-4W? My tests indicate that the presence of just one OX-4L will have an effect equal to the fairings have already been jetisoned.
schlosrat
I have a pair of gigantors on my rover, but I also didn’t do nearly as methodical or quantitative a test as you did. My rover has all sorts of parts though, so it’s quite possible I might have some other part with the same or similar behavior. You know what this game needs? A wind tunnel mode! Let’s ask them to build one in between the VAB and the administration building. It can use the hot air generated by all the administrators to help reduce cost
Draradech
KSP2 0.1.0.0.20892 - Windows 10 Home 21H2 - Ryzen 9 3950X - RTX 2080 Ti (Driver 531.18) I also have had problems with fairings not working correctly - sometimes. The drag indicators from KSP1 were always extremely helpful to identify occlusion problems.
