Flight After docking, no orbit

After docking with another vessel, the orbit for my combined vessel does not appear in the map. The apoapsis and periapsis show in random points on the screen, not in space. They stay fixed relative to the screen when I move around and blink in and out. I cannot create any maneuver nodes because there's no orbit to click on.
