Is rescue possible?

Is it possible to do rescue missions in the stock version? I was thinking about using a 3 crew capsule with only 2 in it to rescue a kerbal, but it doesn't seem to be possible to remove a crew

While it is not possible to remove crew from the pod without editing it, you can launch a mission and EVA one or two Kerbals to free seats, and then rendezvous with those you want to rescue.

Just EVA a kerbal while the rocket is still on the launch pad and while he is holding on to the command pod press escape and select 'end flight'. Than go to the tracking station and resume control of your rocket that is still on the launchpad. Voila! Only two crew! Repeat to have only one crew member in the capsule...

jonnern might be wondering exactly how to EVA a Kerbal....

On the crew portraits you will see EVA and IVA when you mouse over them, click EVA to exit a Kerbal, click IVA for a cool interior view (not all cockpits are finished yet though)

Rather than ending the mission for the EVAing Kermans, I like to park them under the nozzles.... Saves on the inevitable future funerary expenses.

EDIT: Yes, I realize the disparity of murdering a Kerbal to make a seat available to save a Kerbal....

Why not just add the crew tank part ? holds 5 extra crew members and 400 litres of fuel too.

You can rescue a 3 kerbal stranded crew with that.

So long as you remember to add the ladder underneath the hatch............

I'm pretty sure that if you add a secondary command pod to your vehicle, it will not have any base crew. So make a vehicle with your base as an unmanned pod (or manned, if you want), and then add a second pod to it. The second pod should be empty (no crew), and you can go find your stranded hero kerbal and let him relax in comfort in the empty pod on the way home.

Note: I'm fairly sure this works. I haven't actually tried it myself but I've seen it mentioned a few times.

I think you may also be able to EVA one of your crew in a manned vehicle while it's on the launchpad? If this is possible, you can just take one guy out on Kerbin and let him chill at the space center while you fly out to rescue the other. This one's just a guess.

Yes, it is possible NOW, but it was not possible when the OP made this thread almost a year ago...
