Put an object in orbit and see it pass from the ground!

Recommended Posts

This one isn't really hard, but it's very, very cool. I just did it and once I have the video edited and encoded, I'll put it on YouTube (and hope the resolution is high enough to see it!)

This tests your circular orbit and orbit transfer skills. The idea is to build a rocket that has some high-visibility part on it (I used Captain Slug's flare), and place that part into a very low (~36,000m) orbit. Then deorbit and while sitting on the ground, wait for the object to come around once and pass overhead.

I wasn't sure the draw distance was good enough for this, but...well, I'll attach some screens.

I don't think I've ever been so excited to see a stupid little flickering speck. :P

Edit: Video!

For a great deal of added difficulty, you could try putting something into orbit - any orbit - while sitting on the ground.

Turns out that if you modify parts to activate when disconnected, you can fly and stage a rocket you're not on. I've been playing with this lately.

There are some problems apart from the complete lack of instrumentation / camera, such as: you have to attach the parts in reverse order (They're getting farther from the Cmd Module), and the decouplers stick to the bottoms of your engines.

Do WASD still work?
