Loony's RP1 Misadventures

Recommended Posts

one day I decided: let's abandon all my mission reports, and go quiet for a week while secretly training myself in the sacred ways of the RP1 player.

One week later...

Loony's RP1 Misadventures!

This is actually my fifth sixth seventh save...

Spoiler

Part 1: The Bees' Knees

LAUNCH ONE: BeesNees 1

3VLYdOp.png

Powered by 5 Tiny Tim boosters, and an extra Veronique engine, the BeesNees 1 is a little larger than your usual first RP1 rocket!

pnO7sBc.png

The next stage is an Aerobee...

4HL0U3O.png

The BeesNees 1 crosses the Karman Line, but it still has one stage left!

2km43eX.png

Eventually, the rocket ends up with an apoapsis of 417 km.

8gpABXI.png

It was eventually terminated by Range Safety at 40 km.

rZlnrwB.png

Wow, we're on the news!

LAUNCH TWO: BeesNees 1

wp3MNrt.png

The BeesNees 2 is a carbon copy of the earlier launch, but with a parachute!

PvgMQgE.png

It lands in the fields outside the KSC.

StjAgk9.png

Well, the next launch is about to be a big one... the "Ardy" rocket!

Spoiler

Part 2: My friend Ardy!

LAUNCH THREE: BeesNees-Ardy

VaCtLGT.png

Liftoff! Powered by the RD-101 rocket, the "Ardy" first stage will fling the two stage extended BeesNees rocket to 3000 km downrange.

1Ba85vl.png

Although one of the Aerobees failed, the launch vehicle should be overkill enough to compensate.

Xs5igvU.png

There we go!

LAUNCH FOUR: Ardy-R500

R72VEgb.png

Another launch, this time an Ardy-R500 completing the Downrange LV Dev contract.

  • 1 month later...

hold up... here we go again!

Part one: NOT THE BEES!

CMF9y9G.png

BeesNees 1 lifts off with the combined power of 5 Tiny Tim Boosters. Well, until the central Veronique engine blew up them.

8SMSJvc.png

After a explosive start, the rocket somewhat stabilises.

zCZenL1.png

The second stage fires after the dynamic pressure is low enough.
w83LK6q.png

Third stage fires speeding the probe to 2.6 km/s!

rPkKf4K.png

The probe burns up on reentry though.

lxyiGjF.png

There we go!

1mT9Nsa.png

zR7CaLG.png

BeesNees 2 is able to recover the probe from space successfully!

Next step: Downrange!

Part 2: Downing the range

Guess what! The good old Ardy is back!

MmPMfjY.png

First Stage: RD-101

K2k2dWY.png

Second Stage: 2x XASR-1

wgGBSGY.png

Third Stage: XASR-1

ZHqMAaA.png

The rocket flew about 3500 km downrange before it was terminated by ground control.

zuOgI32.png

A biological payload was launched on an uprated BeesNees 2.

kcA2xPz.png

QBxxpNS.png

An Ardy-R500 was launched for the Downrange LV contract. It overperformed and was terminated by ground control after it completed the contract.

With that, 1953 is over!

0aFsLQp.png

UiSNP5V.png

An Ardy-R-FB rocket was launched Northeast to get film and biological experiments done.

EthQyby.png

sDL8T7J.png

An identical rocket was sent over the sea.

It's 1955, and time to complete our first program!

AksbSaP.png

The Ardy-DumpsterFire rocket is ready to launch! First stage: RD-101

asQdXDN.png

The guidance computer is detached to better control the unguided upper stages.

32ik1me.png

Second stage: 3x AJ10-27 (one failed, boo hoo)

U2fshAf.png

Third stage: GCRC booster

hCwFmD1.png

Fourth stage: GCRC booster

kh2zGTl.png

The rocket almost goes over 6000 km downrange and burns up over the west coast of Africa.

Xos2ayh.png

Goodbye Early Rocket Development, hello Early Satellites!

The Sparky 1 is the first orbit-capable launch system created by the Loony Space Program. It's basically the DumpsterFire-Ardy with 2 strap-on boosters.

Success!

7th November 1955: First Artificial Satellite

Okay, I've just put a satellite into orbit with a glorified V2 with 2 Viking Sounding Rockets as boosters. What next?

Well I guess I need to wait a bit to actually launch useful things into orbit though...

The Ardy-FBPlus uses a second stage with 3 Aerobees to boost the payload further downrange.
