[AAR] The Grand Tour - Voyage To The Planets

That isn't the Greek alphabet, it is the phonetic alphabet. There is a major difference between the two. Being the phonetic alphabet is used in radio communications if normal speech can't be understood clearly, and the aircraft's call sign. Eg C-GARY (my solo aircraft) is Golf Alpha Romeo Yankee. [first letter is omitted since it is the nation code, and the second gets omitted after communications is initiated]

CHAPTER 6

MOHO ORBIT INSERTION

gDnYUoC.jpg

***

- We have entered the Moho's sphere of influence.

- It's about time. What's our status BERTY?

- Inclination 25.3 degrees. Apoapsis 17 kilometres. Predicted delta-V to execute an orbit insertion – 4494 metres per second plus minus 200 metres per second.

- Err, isn't this slightly above our estimations?

- That is correct, commander. Total delta-V after the braking burn is expected to be less than 3300 m/s.

- Crap. Will it suffice for the Eve transfer?

- Including the inclination difference between our orbital planes – yes, although barely.

- Have you calculated the “Proteus†mass after Moho Shield separation?

- Naturally, commander.

- Frak. All right, first things first – begin the preparations for the braking burn.

- Affirmative.

2E6NQmC.jpg

- Attention, this is commander Jeb speaking. We have entered the Moho's sphere of influence – congratulations everybody, we did it after all. Prepare the ship for the acceleration during the braking burn. Estimated g-force is – what is it BERTY?

- 2.23g.

- Estimated g-force is more than 2 gees, so secure everything properly. We're about to get some serious artificial gravity at last, if only for a few minutes. Ned, begin prepping the Moho Shield for a deployment. Bill, come in to the command pod please. How are we looking with time, BERTY?

- Estimated burn duration 4 minutes 36 seconds. Time to the insertion burn 2 hours 24 minutes 58 seconds.

- That quickly? How fast are we going right now?

- Our velocity in relation to the Moho's surface equals to 17643,6 kilometres per hour or 4901 metres per second.

- Huh, being so deep in the Sun's gravity well it shouldn't be surprising I guess. Okay, we don't have much time so let's start checking the systems.

- T minus 1 minute.

- Let's hope everything will be fine.

- Ned has been checking the engines for days, I'm sure we'll be okay.

- And if we don't achieve orbit?

- We have a few options but let's not talk about this now, okay?

- T minus 30 seconds.

- Well, let's hope that this rock is worth it.

- Oh I'm sure it is, Bob. We didn't even land on it and we already have made few important discoveries.

- Yes, this disappearing atmosphere is puzzling.

- T minus 5 seconds. Please prepare for acceleration during the insertion burn.

- Long-time no see, gravity!

- This is not the real gra…

- Oh crap! Everything's… so heavy!

- Insertion burn will be completed in T minus 4 minutes 30 seconds.

XW0UrQx.jpg

VVymSzR.jpg

- How… are we looking, BERTY?

- 1898 m/s spent, 1826 m/s needed to circularize. “Proteus†remaining delta-V 4827 m/s.

- This is taking too long!

FsDZDeR.png

- BERTY, what's our status?

- 2895 m/s spent, 870 m/s needed to circularize. “Proteus†remaining delta-V 3866 m/s.

BRE7ObI.jpg

- Warning. Minor structural failure in section B.

- Oh great, here we go again…

gdKNtqE.jpg

- Elliptic orbit achieved.

- Yes!

- Warning. Engines overheated. Cooling system initialized.

- What's going on, why did we stop burning?!

- We're on the day side now Bob, the engines are exposed to the Sun, we need some time before finishing circularization.

- Doesn't matter, we're in orbit! Ned?

- Yes?

- Start deploying the shield and send someone to check the section B, there was a minor structural failure and we don't want any surprises on this ship.

- Copy that.

- BERTY, circularize as soon as you can and start looking for a landing site. And start calculating our transfer window for Eve.

- Affirmative, commander.

HX478QW.png

- We've undocked, “Proteusâ€Â.

- Remember, you won't have much time down there. As soon as the Sun shows up you have to get out of there, you got it?

- Don't worry Bill, I don't want us the end up fried here.

- I'm so excited! We will be the first to land on Moho!

- Okay gentleman – it's time for a ride.

Great chapter Czo, but what exactly are you trying to accomplish, assigning them into teams?

And how did you think of those ridiculous (but great) names?

You'll see; well, all of them are KSP generated :D

Great work Czokletmuss!!

Do you think that you can repost the download for Kadmos and used mods?

"Kadmos" is on the Spaceport: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ipmv-kadmos/

The list is missing (April purge) but I will reconstruct it and the whole AAR in a separate thread when the mission report subforum will be reinstituted.

This is the best storywriting i've yet seen in any fanfic (Chobit has a well written backstory to her gallery, but this is gameplay :) ). I wish i could manage a feat like this, but right now i've only just gone to Duna and am planning my vehicle for an inner planets tour. I could ask for a few tips on ÃŽâ€v management in motherships, i don't know how you do it.

Step numero Uno: Kethane (I'm fairly sure that after reading this you've checked it out).

Step Dos: Depending on your tour (only orbital, with landing, science, etc) you need to accordingly construct the whole ship. The mothership is responsible for hosting all fuel, all crew, and all propulsion (be careful as to not unbalancing your mothership with the attached landers).

Step Tres: So, obviously, youre gonna use Nuclear Engines (go get NovaPunch and mount those 2-meter NERVAs!), but even those run dry after a while, so youre going to need a sophisticated miner-lander. This miner should convert on the ground, in order to remain small, and have PLENTY of fuel tanks installed (I recommend downloading a mod which has stock fuel tanks but with no fuel in them, or doing this yourself by copy+paste and modding the parts.cfg to have 0 starting fuel), this includes Bi and Monopropellant tanks.

Step Quatro: Now that you have your fuel sorted, you need to decide if you want to land on moons/planets. This means building relatively simple low-range craft with (preferably) MechJeb, in order to pinpoint the ascent. If need be, you can also build small landers that remain on the planets and moons forever, and are preferably probes and not Kerbals!

Step Cinco: Go do a lot of research on interplanetary flight (orbital injection burns etc) in order to conserve fuel.

Now, you should be set. Don't forget ORDA and Quantum Struts, if you want to have it easy docking and holding your ship together. I also recommend the HOME pack, as it has very nice habitats (sitting in a capsule for a 4 hour space flight and doing the same for multiple years is a whole different thing).

Good luck!

Fantastic story! I'm eagerly awaiting the next instalment! It kind of makes my palty achievements of "Yay! I landed a probe on Mun!" kind of pathetic though.

Also, can I ask just how confusing it is to use all those mods, particularly MechJeb? I can barely handle the basic game and even then, it's mostly guesswork and poking maneuver nodes until they look right. Surely a veteran like yourself can share a few tips for a rookie like me?

Here's my attempt at a Inner Planets Tour ship: Aletherium.

Crew: 6

Delta-v: Around 7000-8000 m/s onboard (The lander's tank and engines skew this measurement)

Delta-v Estimated Requirement: 9720 m/s

T/W Ratio: 0.39

Payload: 6 kerbals, one Mylea-Class Lander with approx 1400 m/s, and 4 probes for the Inner planets.

Engines: 8 NERVA Nuclear engines

Fuel: 2 R-64 Fuel tanks, 2 R-32 Fuel tanks

Working on pic... Can't remember how to post them anymore!

The main reason i didn't include Kethane equipment on this was the T/W ratio. In order to maximize that, and Delta-v (to minimize needed Kethane equipment), i found it altogether easier to go without it. Besides, i'm not very good at making a Moho Kethane lander.

PLEASE NOTE: Yes, there is no Eve manned lander. I have no idea how i would even approach carting an Eve ascent capable craft all the way there, much less on this mothership.

Help appreciated! Please pm me, we don't need to overlook Proteus here.

P.S. Not trying to steal your thunder here, czokletmuss. Probably start my own thread if people starting replying to me here.

I reckon the 'kraken' on bop is not a kraken but another big squad fixed before it became a problem, called octopus. If there was a bug called that, this is just an idea and I'm not saying there ever was a bug called octopus that squad fixed. But it DOES look more like an octopus.
