Good chapter,

I think Rozer will splash down, hard.

And that bill won't die.

He won't.

Will he?

:dun dun:

Just as long as Rozer doesn't run around in a yellow and black suit killing Bill :P

kill_bill1.jpg

I thank you for killing many of my hours when I was supposed to be completing homework.:D

Pleasure is all mine :D

Now i think you have fooled me. All three words is offcourse used. Because the chapter will be named. The Babbling Baboon lands on Laythe, or maybe, A babbling band of Baboons lands on Laythe.
They will go for a swim on Laythe, right?
A swim... with baboons! Laythian Blue Baboons!

And you guessed it! Now I have to write this chapter from a scratch :sigh: My loyal laythian baboons...

Don't feel bad, I read them all before the movies and STILL didn't get the reference! The books are still better than the movies, despite the good acting.

Yes, you just can't squeeze a year where a lot is described down to two hours. However as i recently reread and re watched the whole series again, i noticed that the movies often used the dialog right out of the books. That made me happy.

I didn't read Harry Potter books besides the first one, sorry :(

CHAPTER 44

LAYTHE LANDING

DANREY: Oxium is flowing, everything's looking good. Depressurization in 10 minutes.

SID: We copy, Danrey. Before we go out please check the readings one last time.

DANREY: Sure thing.

SID: Are you ready? Have you checked the monoprellant level in your EMU? If we-

ROZER: :cold gaze:

SID: Err. Could you check it out once again, just to be sure? Please.

ROZER: I think I can.

SID: Right, right. Ahem. What about these readings, Dan?

DANREY: I've got it. Hmm. No changes, still 1,52 Sievert per hour on the outside.

SID: Or 1520 mSv per hour. And my dosimeter shows right now… 5,3 mSv per hour.

EMU: EXTRAVEHICULAR MOBILITY UNIT AUTODIAGNOSTIC INITIATED.

DANREY: Frak.

SID: You've got to get out here as soon as you can, Dan. The minute we've landed safely I want you to start preparing transfer burn to Vall, you hear me?

EMU: OXIUM LEVEL 97,54%. MONOPROPELLANT LEVEL 100 %.

DANREY: I'll be fine. It's you two who are going out. One thousand five hundred milisiverts-

ROZER: Five hundred twenty.

EMU: PRESSURE NOMINAL. LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM NOMINAL. COOLING SYSTEM NOMINAL.

DANREY: -five hundred twenty milisiverts, I mean good Kod, it's 300 times more than inside the ship. Are you-

SID: We've been through this, Dan. As long as we do this quickly we should be fine, it shouldn't take more than three of four minutes for us to get to the lander.

DANREY: But during these four minutes you'll get greater dose of radiation than you've been exposed to since “Proteus†left Kerbin! And it has been more than three years in space. What if something goes wrong? What if your spacesuit-

ROZER: We can't execute the transfer burn with LAMGML docked to Crew Habitation Module – reaction wheels aren't powerful enough to correct with center of mass so far from the center of thrust and we don't have enough monopropellant to do this using RCS. We can't undock the lander from LAMGML – the circuits are damaged. We need to do this manually, so we need to get into the lander.

R3oS93T.jpg

DANREY: But-

ROZER: There are no “butsâ€Â. We do this, end of story. How much time we have left?

EMU: WARNING. HIGH LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED. 5,327 MILISIVERTS PER HOUR.

DANREY: Depressurization complete in 3 minutes.

SID: We'll be okay, Dan. Radiation isn't some malevolent force – it's all about distance, time of exposure and shielding. It's not magic, it's science and calculations doesn't look that bad. Even if we'll be forced to retreat to LAMGML, we-

ROZER: No. Without both of CHM we can't continue the mission. We need to do this. We will do this.

EMU: WARNING. HIGH LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED. PLEASE SEEK SHELTER.

SID: Well-

ROZER: Enough talking. The decision has been made and there's no turning back now. How long, lieutenant?

DANREY: One minute now. Just please, please be careful – I don't want you to-

SID: We won't Dan. We won't.

DANREY: :sigh: I wish BERTY could supervise this fraking EVA.

ROZER: Too much interference from magnetosphere. We're on our own. Time?

DANREY: 30 seconds.

EMU: WARNING. HIGH LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED. PLEASE SEEK SHELTER.

ROZER: Good. Preparing the hatch for opening. Stand behind me, professor. Hatch ready. Setting watch alarm for 3 minutes. Switch to external camera, lieutenant.

DANREY: Copy that, I have a visual of the lander. 10 seconds.

wbNryal.jpg

DANREY: 10 seconds.

SID: You know that we don't have to exit at the very moment we can safely open the hatch, right?

ROZER: Every minute we wait we get more irradiated. So we won't wait.

DANREY: Depressurization completed!

ROZER: Hatch released. Uhm!

EMU: WARNING. DANGEROUSLY HIGH LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED. 35,769 MILISIVERTS PER HOUR. PLEASE SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.

SID: Wait, 36 mSv? Danrey, are you sure about the readings? We're still protected by the LAMGML capsule, it shouldn't-

ROZER: Too late now. Hatch opened, all systems nominal. I'm going out.

EMU: CRITICAL ALERT. LETHAL LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED.

ROZER: I'm out. Initiating EMU.

EMU: 1526,295 MILISIVERTS PER HOUR. YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER. CRITICAL ALERT.

SID: 3 minutes 50 seconds.

ROZER: EMU's working. I'm detaching from the hull.

EMU: WARNING. ACUTE RADIATION SYNDROME IMMINENT. IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM WILL OCCUR IN 20 MINUTES.

SID: 3 minutes 30 seconds!

odd5gMD.jpg

ROZER: I'm off the structure. Thrusters operational.

3kqC4yG.jpg

EMU: CRITICAL ALERT. LETHAL LEVEL OF RADIATION DETE-

DANREY: What was that?!

ROZER: Nothing, I turned off the VUI.

DANREY: You what?!

ROZER: It was starting to piss me off.

SID: 3 minutes! You better hurry!

ROZER: Mhm. Correcting the – frak.

iochHrS.jpg

SID: Rozer?

ROZER: The EMU software is rebooting, must've been some glitch caused by radiation. I'm drifting.

SID: Holy ****!

ROZER: But I'm drifting in the right direction. I can see Jool.

4dxCQ4e.jpg

SID: 2 minutes 30 seconds!

DANREY: For the love of Kod, Rozer!

ROZER: I can't do anything right now, in case you haven't noticed, so please shut up.

SID: 2 minutes 20 seconds. How are you feeling? Dizziness? Nausea?

ROZER: A little. But...

DANREY: What? What is it?!

ROZER: I can see light flashes, tiny white sparkles. They are everywhere.

SID: It's the Cherenkov's radiation in vitreous humor, the biological gel in your eye.

ROZER: Thank you, professor. You can learn something everyday.

DANREY: Crap! Is is serious?!

SID: I wouldn't worry about this right now. 2 minutes left! How's your-

EMU: REBOOTING COMPLETED. ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL.

ROZER: I'm in control. I'm going to the hatch.

EMU: CRITICAL ALERT. LETHAL LEVEL OF RADIATION DETECTED. 1526,295 MILISIVERTS PER HOUR. YOUR LIFE-

ROZER: Shut up.

KAHmo20.jpg

SID: 1 minute 40 seconds!

ROZER: The hatch is locked. I'm going through the docking port.

DANREY: Holy crap, holy crap.

ROZER: Lieutenant?

DANREY: What?

SID: 1 minute 20 seconds!

ROZER: Do me a favor and be silent.

SID: 1 minute! Frak it, Rozer, you need to-

ROZER: Uhh! Docking port is opened. I'm going in.

DANREY: Thank Kod!

SID: What's the radiation level?

ROZER: ### sieverts ### turn ### fessor ### up

SID: Dan, can you hear what he's saying?

DANREY: No, I'm getting interference, I don't hear a crap!

SID: Did he closed the docking port?

DANREY: I don't know!

SID: Frak. I'm going out.

EMU: TIMER SET FOR FOUR MINUTES. COUNTING.

DANREY: We don't know whether the lander is operational at all! You need to wait until-

SID: We don't have time, Dan! He's getting irradiated but so we are. I'm out, I'm closing the LAMGML hatch.

EMU: CRITICAL ALERT. LETHAL LEV-

DANREY: Oh, frak me...

SID: Uhh! Done. Wait with the repressurization until we know what's the lander's status. Do you copy Dan?

DANREY: Oh, frak me...

EMU: THREE MINUTES THIRTY SECONDS.

SID: Dan?

DANREY: I copy, I copy – just go!

da4ovoe.jpg

SID: EMU is nominal, thrusters are working. I'm getting closer to the hatch.

DANREY: Oh ****. Sid, I'm getting a radiation alert on my dosimeter!

SID: Damn it, the Bremsstrahlung is getting worse!

DBC5Jk3.jpg

EMU: THREE MINUTES.

SID: Take another iodine pill, now! Rozer, come in. Rozer, do you copy?

ROZER: ### atch ### locked ### will ### for you, prof ###

DANREY: Sid, you – wait. Oh fraking great, now the camera isn't working. I can't see you anymore!

SID: What?

DANREY: I can't see you anymore! Sid, if you won't be able to get in the ### must come back to LAMGML, do you copy?

SID: Dan, I can't ### you, please repea ### at the hatch, I repeat, I'm at the ###

DANREY: Rozer? Captain Rozer, can you hear me?

DANREY: Captain, do you copy?

ROZER: ### switch ### ternal ### switch to the int ###

DANREY: Ah, crap! Switching to the intercom.

SID: Can he hear us now?

DANREY: Yes! Yes, I can hear! Oh Kod, are you safe?

ROZER: The lander is operational, lieutenant, and we are fine. Right, professor?

Er5V34h.jpg

DANREY: What's the dosage? Did you make it in time?

SID: Rozer opened the hatch from the inside, so I wasn't exposed as long as he was. Still, we got more or less, let me see… 120 milisivert. That's five year of cumulative exposure on Kerbin on average. But we should be fine!

DANREY: Oh, thank Kod for that!

ROZER: Kod has nothing to do with this. Our EMU are slightly damaged but that's nothing we can't fix. Prepare the Payload for separation, we're going to the parking orbit at once – the sooner we land, the better.

SID: But we didn't even pressurized the-

ROZER: I said we do it now. Proceed, lieutenant.

DANREY: Almost done. But won't we loose contact after the separation?

ROZER: Focus. We'll be using lander's telecoms, not EMU's antenna. Are you ready?

DANREY: Almost… there. Payload ready for separation.

ROZER: The charges go off on my mark. Mark.

q2w9ras.jpg

ROZER: Separation successful.

SID: At last something went just like it should.

ROZER: Lieutenant, you can dock the LAMGML to the right docking node now. We're going to the parking orbit, you'll have more space for the docking maneuver. RCS operational.

DANREY: Roger.

EMU: OXIUM LEVEL 95,43%

SID: Listen, could you please start the repressurization?

ROZER: Done. Go to the habitation module and start preparing it. We need to check if everything's working properly before we land.

wlBce3z.jpg

94KFbD2.png

***

DANREY: LAMGML has docked, connection is secured. Everything is all right.

SID: What value your dosimeter is showing?

DANREY: Uhm, 5,31 milisivert. Crap.

ROZER: Is the LV-NB operational?

DANREY: That's affirmative. Listen, I can stay here for a day or so, you don't need to hurry at all. Take your time and make sure everything is working and then-

ROZER: Thank you for your concern, lieutenant, but we have our orders. You need to get Payload C safely to Vall. After you get our confirmation of successful landing, you leave Laythe's SOI. ASAP. Do you understand?

DANREY: ...

ROZER: Do you understand?

DANREY: Yes.

ROZER: Good. We're gonna need at least several hours to prepare for landing, so you may just as well try to take a nap in the meantime.

DANREY: Are you kidding me? How am I going to-

ROZER: You need to be focused, so you need to rest. Laythe Lander out.

lm53sXb.jpg

***

SID: Everything's ready. I double checked the acceleration couches and the voice user interface, so that you can control the lander during the atmospheric entry and, well, landing.

ROZER: Good.

SID: It's quite ironic, actually – we're going to land on the ony mun with bodies of liquid on its surface while being submerged and in g-suits.

ROZER: The water tank in acceleration couches is the only way for us to preserve our spines during the landing, professor. You should know that.

SID: Of course I know that! It's just quite funny: to arrive on a water world in a water tank, you know? I mean :sigh: okay, whatever.

ROZER: We will land here, on this small peninsula using the probe as a radio beacon. This will allow very precise landing, so I expect us to touchdown less than a half kilometer from the probe. The terrain is very flat, the ocean is close and what's most important, protection from the radiation will be substantial thanks to the mass of the atmospheric gases directly above us.

JJnQ0bV.png

SID: Well yeah, that's what I said earlier, captain.

ROZER: I just want you to understand – if, for some reason, we land elsewhere, much higher above the sea level and with less radiation protection, we won't abort the mission. We will stay as long as we can and gather as much data as we can before leaving. Are we clear?

SID: Yes.

ROZER: Good.

SID: Speaking of which, shouldn't we be passing the landing site right now? I can't wait to check whether the readings from the probe were correct!

ROZER: Indeed we are. Take a last look if you want – in 20 minutes we're executing deorbit burn.

Ae6ad5I.jpg

LAYTHE LANDER: WATER TANKS ARE FULL. ACCELERATION COUCHES READY.

ROZER: We're ready, Payload C. Wait until we confirm deorbit burn.

DANREY: Copy that.

ROZER: Are you ready professor?

SID: Yes. Yes, I'm ready.

ROZER: Good. Initiate automatic landing protocol.

LAYTHE LANDER: AFFIRMATIVE. AUTOMATIC LANDING PROTOCOL INITIATED. PLEASE PREPARE FOR THE DEORBIT BURN. TEN. NINE. EIGHT. SEVEN.

SID: :mumbles:

ROZER: What is it?

SID: Nothing. I just hope everything will work this time, I really do.

ROZER: We'll see about that soon enough.

LAYTHE LANDER: THREE. TWO. ONE. DEORBIT BURN IN PROGRESS. RCS ONLINE.

ROZER: You will – peak acceleration is going to be around 4,3 g.

LAYTHE LANDER: DEORBIT BURN COMPLETED. COURSE CORRECTION BY 6,8 METERS PER SECOND REQUIRED.

ROZER: We're on course, lieutenant. We will enter the thermosphere in a few minutes, so expect communication blackout in any moment.

DANREY: Roger. I'll wait for your transmission from the ground.

LAYTHE LANDER: COURSE CORRECTION COMPLETED. LANDER IS ON COURSE. ALTITUDE 129 KILOMETERS.

ROZER: In case of the emergency ascent, you should be able to rendez-vous with us in an hour. That's it, Payload C – radio silence from now on.

DANREY: Copy that. Good luck and kodspeed.

SID: Thank you, Dan.

LAYTHE LANDER: ALTITUDE 43 KILOMETERS. RELATIVE VELOCITY 1847,2 METERS PER SECOND.

SID: It's a shame we can't see the mun right now. It must be a magnificent view, coming roaring through the upper layers of the atmosphere.

killing off rozer

i like it:)

Damn you to hell Czo. Making me have a reason to like Rozer is not okay.
Well, from the point when I started to read this chapter I knew where this was going. I actually like the idea of Rozer sacrificing himself for the mission, seems like a reasonable thing for him to do.

I think you missed something, folks :)
