[0.22.X] BobCat ind. Historical spacecraft thread

The LER wasn't really part of Constellation. There was no funding associated with it and no real plans to deliver it to the Moon. I suppose they would have landed it on a cargo Altair, but the height of the Altair (6 meters) would have made it difficult. This is just another one of the big problems with Constellation. It was a poor plan, and it's a good thing it was finally cancelled.

The LER evolved into the SEV, which is a more promising concept with its LIDS docking rings. It can be turned into a small space station, an airlock module for a DSH, a free flying spacecraft, or a surface rover. For the moment, the SEV is also just a mockup and isn't funded either, but as a modular design, it would have fit KSP better than the old LER. There is still the issue of how to launch it and land it anywhere.

Bobcat,

You are a friggin' genius! I mean that. Can't wait to get my hands on the Altair and LER/SEV. Thank you so much for all of the time you invest in doing these mods.

Im curious aswell...I think nothing is "planned" for now, but he did mention something about rebalancing and remodelling Blok D...And that we might see a 1-man command pod (Vostok) after 0.20 comes out

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DAMN, Bobcat, that looks ready for release.

...

Yes, yes, I know, Soon*TM

How will we get the LRV from the lander stage?

I think you would have needed to send a separate unmanned module out there with the LRV- The descent stage, witht the lander on top. Possibly more than one lander... In the low gravity the shocks would have allowed the unmanned vehicle to just, well, drive off.

The LER is the SEV with wheels, Nibb.

No, the LER was only a rover. The SEV is a multi-role exploration habitat that can have wheels attached to it, but can also be used in other roles. It has LIDS docking rings on the side and a more realistic design. But yeah, it's Bobcat's choice on which one he wants to make...

Bobcat, I love the chassis of the LER. Does it really drive sideways as in your picture? If so, it's really a shame that you don't put a docking port on the side so that it could dock to a hab module or to make a mini-base with 2 or 3 of them.

It also needs some sort of ramp to drive it down from an Altair landing stage.

I recently did a re entry test of the Orion capsule, starting from 2000 km I preformed my de orbit burn and re entered at 2900 m/s and managed to decelerate enough so that I was moving at 7.9 m/s and I then used the service module(I used the ATV derived SM) to slow me down the last few m/s to a safe Soyuz style landing in the desert of kerbin.

I can't wait for LER,Altair and Ares V
