Can't select target - why not?

Recommended Posts

It is impossible for me to click on some objects in orbit and set them as my target. Some items I can, some I cannot. Doesn't seem to matter if they are in similar orbits, or different ones. The one satellite I really want to target (for docking) simply refuses. If I click on it, it comes up with the set target dialog, but for the name of ANOTHER item in a different orbit! Bug...? Any workarounds.

If I can't set it as target I can't use mechjeb to get info on it. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried rotating and maybe zooming the view a little? I find if another object's orbit is visible and behind the object I'm trying to select, it can be hard to get the right object.

Another thing worth trying, you should be able to click anywhere on the object's orbit to target it.

Yeah I've tried every permutation of view/zoom I can think of. It is a satellite in circular orbit, with a booster right on top of it. I can always choose to set the booster (debris) as target, but not the satellite which is now detached. If I manage to highlight the satellite, it ALWAYS says set target on debris.

I time warped until there was separation of booster/satellite, so no issue highlighting each. I still click on the satellite and it STILL says to set debris as target. Very frustrating!

Clicking on the vessel's orbit seems to be more effective than clicking on the actual vessel. If the option for selecting a target still won't come up, try exiting map view and going back in and try again.

Haystack does not let you select planets. I am currently having this problem trying to select Duna. I can select Ike, Dres, or any other planet, also spacecraft landed on Duna, but not the planet itself. Any suggestions?

I was having this problem setting up a node to fine tune my approach to Jool. I discovered that in some cases you can't set as target a body that you have an encounter planned with.

So, WORKAROUND: set a node that avoids the encounter, then you'll be able to set the target. Then cancel the node

Thank you! That fixed it for me - very useful to know.

I like the Targetron mod for this. There's an unofficial update to adapt it for 0.23.5. Well, for selecting other craft anyway. It provides a menu to select targets, or switch control.

Great tip about using a node for selecting planets!
