A procedural sun? Does that mean that every single time you get a picture of the sun in your artwork, the sun will be different? What does that entail?

no i just use flares for images where the sun is in the distance, the only scene i would use this for is ones like that moho probe where i want good detail on the sun, but it also means i can animate the surface effects

**edit guess I was wrong about Rareden procedural explanation..

carry on.

Was just saying procedural would be good for Fire, smoke , water etc.. algorithm based textures anyway, like the suns surface which would never be the same in any photo.

i aim to achieve something like this, which practically can only be done with procedural fractals

Will the KSP team use your method to animate the sun in ksp? That would be AMAZING.

if i eventually i get it to look like above then i would have to create probably 90 different textures all with a different seed, then squad would need to create a system that scrolls through those 90images

yes procedural generation is an infinitely sized texture basically. like in some games with procedural terrain, its a single image repeated over and over with a overlay map to give it some variation.

no i havent yet, probably will tonight, although i herd the country im in gets fried first

I just found it really ironic how you were saying that the Icarus looks awesome a few pages back, then you have that procedural sun example pic up there, which is a shot from the movie.

You done did it now. This is amazing.

What is the end goal of the procedural fractal sun?

im going to create probably a 1min video of it from this distance and match on real solar flares onto it and make a short moho video

after a bit of post work

If you're doing your post in after effects, try using vector blur set to "direction centre" on a few of your layers to give it that smeary look that you get from solar filaments, it'll also soften the sharp fractal boundaries a bit to get that subsurface scattering effect without expensive renders. Looking pretty sweet though!
