In-game ruler?

If you use the symmetry option (One of the buttons under the parts list in VAB), the parts will all be EXACTLY the same height and spaced correctly (for the most part...complicated builds can get wonky). But say 4x symmetry and angle snap and you should be golden!

It's a bit of an advanced build that I can't use symmetry for unfortunately... Involves creating a Mun base with individual modules and I want to dock them together which means I need landing gear all at the same height. I'm currently making do with 2 Quantum Strut guns parallel with each other and using them as my ruler

I've done something like this before. To get them all the same, I just built a rocket that could deliver a module and only left the part that acted as the base. I would then just build the rest of each individual module on top of that base, but the base would always be the same. For my project it was the flat 3m fuel tank with four landing gear and two docking ports on it. The rest of each module was custom built on top of that platform.

Ah ok interesting idea. I've just come up with an alternative, however. What I'm now doing is building the Mun base as a whole in the VAB and then saving the separate modules with the Subassembly Loader addon. That allows me to have everything at the right height yet still allows the modules to be taken up individually :)

I've wanted a ruler sometimes to make sure my quartets of RCS thrusters are equidistant from my center of mass. I've held the side of my hand up to it to guesstimate, I suppose I should get a real ruler.

While not directly a ruler, I came up with this idea to assist with placement in complex designs.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/25485-An-idea-to-make-the-centre-of-X-system-more-useful-in-craft-design

It's more sophisticated than a ruler. It would give you measurements in all three axis.

It'd be a handy guide for placing everything from RCS thrusters to VTOL jets.

Ah, you know I still haven't tried the loader, I'll have to check it out!
