It is one way, once you go down the steam DRM route you lose your DRM free store access. We haven't seen an update yet on the steam version so if you're at all undecided I'd wait and see if that brings any problems to light, steam's updater often isn't very flexible.

I was considering switching to Steam, but I wasn't sure if I'd still be able to install mods. It also occured to me that Steam users might not get updates as quickly as others, so I stuck with the standard download n' unzip method.

I don't want to switch to steam because when I don't have internet and the offline mode on steam bugs out (like it always does) I won't be able to play KSP.

These days I'd be more worried that the opposite is true, steam insisting on updating the game before it'll let you play which will cause havoc with mod compatibility.

There is a auto-patcher coming for the normal version pretty soon (a patch or two away) if that's the functionality you're interested in.
