Devs....could we please have a warning?

No, this is not what you think!

Around here the thinking seems to be that 0.20 is going to be available 'soon' but could I maybe suggest that we be given some sort of short warning when you are ready to release instead of announce/release at the same time? I ask specifically for those of us on Steam. As you know Steam auto-updates and there is no way currently NOT to update*, and since future updates may or may not break saves and/or mods, a short delay between announce and release (even one day will be ok I guess) will allow those of us on steam to 'prepare' our games so as to not have things break around us. Or at the very least, allow us to minimize the damage on long term saves.

PS. I was not around prior to 0.19 and Steam so have no idea how things were done it the past. Apologies if I am going down the wrong path here.

* Strictly speaking threre is a way, but that would mean having knowledge of an update ready to update (as it were), NOT being logged in to Steam currently and one's internet being "unplugged".

You can set it to that, but I believe you have to go into each game individually and set it to that.

And I believe they don't do this to avoid the forums being clogged with "ERMAGERD NEW UPDATE SOON"

I was under the impression that you could deselect auto updates on steam...

Also this may be relevant if you are worried about the update breaking things -

Does that mean that 0.19.1 mods will not be compatible with 0.20 without an update ?

We're making everything backwards compatible.

The do not update function does not work for Skyrim. at best it delays the update some days.

Now for Skyrim this is not an huge issue, it only affect the SKSE script extender who is updated pretty fast.

For KSP its far more who can break during an update.

This makes me glad I'm not a steam user, I nearly always like to wait a week till after an update comes out, just to let everyone else catch any of the early issues, update mods and also to finish whatever missions I'm doing. If you're a mod user you could find that your entire game gets nuked until the mods get updated.

But even as a non-steam user, I would also like a heads up before a release. Even if that means they complete a build and then wait a week before actually releasing it, so they can tell us that build X is now ready, it will be released in a week.

Even if you're a Steam user, you know you don't have to open/launch the game through Steam, right? At least on a Mac, you can just drag a shortcut of the game application to your Desktop and double-click to launch. So if you don't go through Steam, nothing will update without your permission.

It's very simple to disable auto-updating on Steam.

Also, they don't announce the date ahead of time because:

A) They might have last minute delays and miss the date.

B) The servers are less likely to melt if there's not thousands of people all waiting to start downloading it at the same time.

@Trux: Thanks. That is helpful. Sort of.

@KasperVld: That is disappointing. *shrug* I'll just make a full backup prior to launching the game every time. Problem solved.

@LameLefty: That does not work for Windows. Steam games have to run through Steam. (Unless of course there is some command line that I am unaware of for the KSP exe)

@Everyone else: Disabling "auto-update" on Steam does not work. It never has. At least not for any game I have on Steam. Unless of course it actually works for KSP, which no-one can be sure of until the first update arrives.

This happens becoz it has to be a way to keep all the mods safe in each update.

Some games do this using an extra directory with the same dir structure of the game, so you can place all the mods there.

The difference remains that the mods instead remplace a .cfg file for example, only adds with the same file name the code lines that are different.

So doing it like that, is a lot more easy to manage mods.
