Does Saturn V rocket will return to service:-)

Recommended Posts

Many rockets are black and white even the old Aggregat 4. This is to determine if the rocket is rolling because otherwise you couldn't notice such movements from the Ground. But yes it do looks like similar to the Saturn V.

Interesting, hadn't thought about that. We have this thing called telemetry now...

Nope, you're probably right. White makes sense for cryogenic stuff, reduce the boil-off from solar radiation. There wasn't any black on the space shuttle ET for STS-1 or STS-2, although having the big orbiter hanging off the side makes it easy to see roll there.

I recently read about NASA planing to send unnamed Orion capsule on free return trajectory to the Mun oh i mean Moon :-)

I think presided Obama scrubbed Orion program

Do you think Saturn V size rocket will ever return, I would do anything to be able to fly a Saturn V rocket, even as if it was the last thing in my life.

I wonder how many G Apollo astronaut experienced during launch phase.

No, but I believe their F-1 engines will be returned to service, along with the STS boosters.

They had telemetry on the Saturn V as well and it still was striped.

The paintjob helps regulate temperature, but also if they lose control of the vessel or it loses onboard power they can make some assumptions about the vessel's condition by looking at it and noting its behavior. Having stripes on a part of the hull still helps with identifying a roll control problem in that situation, although by then they'd be looking more at minimizing casualties than saving the mission.

Do you have another theory why rockets are often painted black and white?

Yep it's intended to look somewhat like the Saturn V.

And why was the Saturn painted black and white? Officially, the checker patterns gave engineers a way to measure rotation speed (from camera footage) if the rocket started spinning. Unofficially, It seems likely that the German rocket scientists at NASA had a lot of nostalgia for a movie called "Frau im Mond".

The rocket in that movie was black and white, it rolled out of the assembly building vertically, was lit with spotlights, and launched after a countdown.

The Russians painted their rockets green, rolled them out horizontally, didn't use spotlights, and they just hit the launch button when everything was ready.
