Long-term Laythe Mission (pic heavy) - ^_^ With Part 45 ^_^

G-couches etc often are talked about in scifi enabling short stints of high gs. Maybe fifteen gravities. For extended periods they probably only help up to maybe 4 gs. From what I remembered G-tanks hydrostatic pressure (usually some kind of gel) can at least double that, maybe more. I remember some scifi stories talking about thirty to forty gs, but again, this was over short periods of time. But they aren't going to be decelerating for long. 80 gs... yeah, it is a bit much, but like I said, Kerbals perculiarities might help out.

Yet again a lot of this is based on stuff from scifi stories, which in turn is based on research that might be outdated... still, since I've heard similar stuff from several scifi tales it seems likely to work.

So awesome.

I hadn't considered the technical limitations of dropping both capsules at once - I thought you might be setting up a situation where Hellou escapes safely, but Emilynn (due to heroic sacrifice or just plain bad luck) gets fried - maybe even deliberately not telling her shipmate everything until it's too late. Glad to see it didn't happen that way!

(Edit: also, for your information, the glow of dawn on Laythe - at least in that shot - is more of a pale blue.)

Because I have the Lazor mod installed (just for the docking port camera) I also have the part it comes with that allows you to set the rendering distance to some large number... so I could have used that to allow me to bring both capsules down at the same time (although it would have turned into a huge lag-fest once they passed into range of Fido Bay and all the ships there). BUT, because Emilynn was going to make it in under the 12-hour limit, I didn't need to attempt that. Plus, extra tension.

I see that as of tonight my Long-term Laythe mission thread has become the most-viewed thread in the Mission Reports forum. Thank you all for reading my little adventures.

And Jool is green, which tinges the sky greenish rather than rosy. If that helps.

They're fantastic, and I really appreciate the effort you put in to make them compelling and entertaining.

How did you get the different types of hair for the girls?

I draw the hair by hand in Photoshop to enhance your enjoyment of the story. Sort of as a demonstration of how such a feature could improve players' enjoyment of the game. Give those kerbals more personality!

And how :) The way you write Aldner's dry wit and Nelemy's boyish enthusiasm and awkwardness is brilliant. Yes, we need and want more personality and individual traits for our Kerbals. (^_^)b

Yes, his writing is really good. Lately I have found myself rereading all his work (there is a lot)

Did you come up with their names yourself, or did they appear naturally?

Those names were not generated by the kerbal astronaut name generator, no. The name 'Hellou' was made up so that Aldner could name an island that (for the Scott Manley joke), and the name is made from parts of female names...'Hel' from 'Helen' and 'lou' from 'Louann'. Later, I decided to put her in the game. When I needed other female kerbal names (for waitresses, etc., whom Aldner was naming features after, and later for 'Emilynn'), I just took parts from different female names of people I knew and stuck them together (the way the name generator works in game). When the devs add the option to have female kerbals in the game (as I hope they will sometime before version 1.0) I presume that they will make an alternate database of name fragments derived from female names for naming them.

Oh, I got a good one. What are the names of the Kerbals playing them?

I'm not sure what you mean. Emilynn and Hellou ARE the names of those kerbals now (since I edited the persistence file). They had some mundane kerbal names to begin with in the list of astronaut applicants, but I went in and edited them in the persistence file so that I could hire Emilynn and Hellou as astronauts.

Ah. I see.

Very well done Brotoro. Good flow, risky introduced storyline, and played it through... and survived!

Agree. Much liking the drama.

Had a good chuckle at the 80s movie references. Was totally expecting one from Aliens too.

I'm sorry for the three day old bump, but reading this story was a blast! I hope you can continue writing stories like this! I wish one day I could make a long-term Laythe mission like yours.

Also, might make a tutorial on how to use the Habitation module you used on Laythe for a rocket for the Mun? I liked the design and I intend to start off long-term missions with the Mun, since it's the closest object to Kerbin and therefore the easiest to reach. (I find Minmus harder because of it's lower gravity well and inclined orbit. Plus it's farther away)

But eventually Jool and the rosy light of dawn poked above the eastern horizon. Well, I assume it's a rosy glow (I'm colorblind).

Oh, didn't knew you were colorblind. That must suck.

The horizon isn't a rosy glow, by the way, it's actually just a bright blue. Just givin' ya a heads-up, don't mean to offend ya. :)

The base habitats I use on Laythe are landed via parachutes, so modifications would be needed on the Mün...I'd probably attach some tanks and engines to the top and land the base with a sky crane-like maneuver.

The lander/base used on Vall would work fine on the Mün (it can use just four tanks/engines instead of six on the Mün).

It can be inconvenient at times, but it's not much of a bother.

Any screenshots on how it would look like? I suck at making rockets that carry heavy payloads.

I don't think that would work out, because I plan on the base to send in a minimum of 4 crew members(while still having some room for Jebediah to rest in too, as he's been in the Mün for an insanely long ammount of time awaiting for his base that never came since I suck at KSP, and I bet he's not happy about having to stay all that time crammed up in a Mk1 Command Pod.
