See space on micro-parts.

I've done the challenge guys! E1 is me failing, E2 is me overcoming adversity and succeeding.

Excuse my high-pitched, annoying voice. 14 AND PROUD.

Congrats. I didn't find your voice particularly annoying, if it makes you feel any better. :) I still sound weird when I hear my own voice recorded and played back. 34 AND PROUD! :)

Does exactly as it says on the tin.

Guidelines:

You have to see the edge of the atmosphere using only stock, 0.625 meter parts.

A larger engine is accepted, so long as it is between 1 - 0.625 meters; same with parachutes.

The less it weighs, the more points you get.

You DO NOT have to orbit. just see space. you will get more points if you do orbit.

Rules:

The only things that are allowed to be larger than 0.625 meters are engines, parachutes and command pods.

You must have an apoapsis of at least 70,000 meters

The ship does not have to be manned. It does not effect points

Video evidence is preferred compared to images. If you have only taken images, just put them in a video. It makes it easier to judge. (Whether the evidence is video or image, it will not effect your score.)

You must have proof you attempted the challenge. It could lead to a disqualification if you don't.

Heres the only cheats or mods you can have: Mechjeb, infinite electric charge. (likely more to come)

Good luck, and as always, have fun :)

My first post!

I have a submission for the compo. Duna and back again, only stock parts, tiny size.

Total weight of rocket 9.7 Mass Units

I will edit a video later, but posting some screenshots for now as proof:

IMGUR album

Cheers :D

Here is my submission to the challenge. I flew a small scale rocket to Duna and back to Kerbin, making powered landings on both planets. My Kerbin landing was a touch too fast and I lost my landing legs and engine, but the probe and power supply survived.

The song is called the Pennywhistle Jig, for anyone who cares.

I'm currently working on my design. But I have a question about the rules.

Are radial decouplers allowed?

I see people using radial decouplers. The rules make me think the creator was picturing only single column rockets using small decouplers and oscar fuel tanks. I'm trying to make one that can go to Duna and return but I want to make sure radial decouplers are allowed before I get too serious about it.

Radial decouplers are allowed. And always will be. Maybe.

I was trying to build a rocket to minimus, but my rocket went breakdancing. :D

Hahaha, I love it! In this game it is often the failures/malfunctions that are most entertaining :)

well i made a micro launcher and probe that can probably get anywhere in the system and back to Kerbin

the problem is the hour-long ion burns

Just add more ion drives, big solar arrays, and xenon. I can get .1 m/s accelertation out of my 6 ton 3 ion engine interplanetary base transporter. 6 tons for the whole thing. I even have > 2.5k dV

EDIT: By the way, it has a mass of 6.207 tons which gives me both of the low-mass bonuses.

I like your design mate. Very clean.

I think you might be better off with fewer engines though. As you said in the video, the small engines are quite powerful, and you end up having to throttle them down to avoid wasting fuel against the air resistance. If you are not using all the thrust then basically you are carrying dead weight.

Try removing 2 of the outer engines and see how high your craft gets then :)

You could use the flight avionics package if you just want to keep it stable. those strap-on-the-side engines tend to have good vectoring, so you could perhaps use a couple of the smallest ones for steering. Or possibly even an RCS-style configuration of the "ant engines" if you can get some controls set up for it properly.

...in fact, that sounds like it could work pretty well for things outside of this challenge. Not having to set up monopropellant for rapid turning would be pretty nice.

Glad you think this. Feel free to post your attempt at any time!

Yes! i finally could be bothered to add it to the 'allowed parts' list!

Beware the fuel-to-weight ratio though. If I remember correctly, it is even worse for the donut tanks than for the Oscar-B ones...
