EVA return to Kerbin

I've seen a couple of people with various ways of returning to the surface of a planet, usually Kerbin, from EVA, using some sort of plate or something to grab onto. I've been experimenting with a glider-type of sorts to do this, with a tiny engine to deorbit/get into the atmosphere and wings to glide on re-entry before you deploy a parachute.

It's not been going particularly well though, and my brave Kerbals either end up sliding off the ladder or being catapulted into space. Efforts to include a roof in other have been unproductive too, so I figured I might as well post and recount my issues and see if anyone else has a similar craft/methods of return or ideas/suggestions :3

You need something to block them from gliding off on top and bottom, why not make an box of the 0.19 plates and put ladders inside for them to hold on, you should be able to fit 3 kerbals and more.

for safety use an small landing leg as an door. torrid or oscar tank, two small orange radial boosters and a parachute.
