I just did a small Mun run trying to land at points by myself (after being taught by MechJeb). So I got to the Mun and landed there (after a few hiccups and redos because I wasn't happy with the landing accuracy) and then I returned to KSP... and nearly messed it all up.

First off I forgot to do a quicksave so it was a definite booboo. I remembered when I was in atmosphere and of course you can't save while you are in atmo. So it was slightly worrying. To make matters worse I was coming in with a ship with no lights and a night time landing. And I misjudged the ground. So I hit a bit hard. AND KERBOOOOOOOOOMMM... Loads of explosions. But My Kerbs survived somehow.

When the sun came up I saw this.... and went "WOW!... lucky Kerbonauts there!". EVERY engine had exploded and I had lost two of my landing legs. But the parachutes had slowed it enough that it survived.

This was me doing a fast re-entry to KSP...

Nice. I think those trusses saved the ship.

This was me attempting to land a spaceplane earlier. Stalled at the last second, less than 500m above the ground. I removed those short wings for the next test; all they did in the end was make the plane want to stall the whole way through re-entry.

Don't worry about it, I frequently have unplanned catastrophic dis-assemblies of my rocket that my kerbals can walk away from, they are considered successful failures.

The worst part of this Duna mission, I had plenty of fuel so this should NOT have happened. Oh well...

Good thing it was only the landing legs and not the engine. And huzzah for spare landing legs!

I just bought KSP on Steam yesterday. Now hours later I am wondering, "where did the weekend go?"

I'm an old veteran of Orbiter, so the basics came quickly. After some trial and error, I got a custom lander up to the Mun.

Can't figure out how to attach, but my little lander turned over. Guess I have to build a rescue mission now!

Stock KSP doesnt currently have a grapple system outside of the docking ports. There is a mod called KAS, which adds winches and assorted grappling devices.
