Duna Permanent Outpost Mission Architecture Challenge

Recommended Posts

Yep, im hoping either Ioncross gets some updates or TAC Life Support matures a little more. Also hope they update for the new HOME modules that Bobcat has created.

So far I removed my emergency drop O2 and installed the O2 tank and recycler plus a vent onto the lander. Now I can keep Kerbals on my Duna Station and replenish O2 by sending the ship down near my ground teams and they can top up the fuel and fill the O2 tanks. The module I used for testing yesteday with the 75K effective O2 is my stations main living quarters for up to 8 Kerbals.

I think my next problem is part count, game is getting a little slow at times.

I'm guessing the ladder on top is for getting Kerbals up to repack chutes? You can do it in orbit after re-launching, or if you want them repacked on the ground for safety's sake the Kerbal's jet pack is just barely strong enough to lift them off the ground on Duna. You can just fly up and land on top. Not that removing ladders will help much on mass! :)

Yep, I left it from an earlier build. I've been running around on Duna and omfg, the terrain is just terrible.. my base/hab keeps sliding all over the place for no apparent reason. Im limited to 10ms any faster and it starts getting erratic.

Bah, just rolled it at 9ms.......

Seems to be a COM problem, the front end is slightly heavier then the rear, soon as i drive it backwards it handles just fine till I jumped a 30' dune... :P

I'm seriously doubting that using Minmus is a good idea. Yes, it's easy to get up and down from surface to orbit there, but the long orbital period, the fairly large dV needed to get there, the higher inclination messing up launches from that orbit... I think the Mun might be better in the long run, even accounting for the wasted fuel burning to get the mined goods from Mun surface to orbit.

I've been playing around doing a slingshot maneouver around Kerbin from Minmus to get a non-hohmann intercept with Duna, but I think I'm just too far past the optimal date to get enough radial dV to manage an intercept. Perhaps if Minmus was in a better position in it's orbit around Kerbin I might have a chance, but by the time that comes around Duna will be too far behind Kerbin in it's orbit so... Naaa. I've got the fuel, so if I time it right I should be able to launch earlier than the scheduled launch window from Minmus. Here's hoping.

Love lazy saturdays!

is up as well. I had a heck of a time editing it as there were quite a few pauses and interuptions, so I'm moving to post-commentary in the future (about halfway through ep 4 I make the switch). So far, not a complete failure, but my has it come close...

My mobile base Mk1 test team has been so good I decided to send them a present, the Mk8 VTOL model, now with 30% less broken stuff cause we shipped Jeb out to Minmus a week before we build it.

Capable of supplying O2 for up to 6 Kerbals in an emergency indefinitely, 4 RTG's for those annoying brownouts at night, a KAS system to refuel landers along with a Kethane drill and converter, and 4x KE-J65 Zero-Bypass Turbine Micro Edition engines (1/10 scaled down kethane engines).

Flight time is around 15-30 minutes, range is better then walking. Bob says "It flies like a brick with engines attached and don't even think of going fast, unless you like hitting the ground fast."

Comes equipped with 2x Rockomax 24-77 engines in case you forget to watch the kethane fuel gauge.... And if you need them the word is "Crash-landing".

Just did an 81Km flight and I used about 200 Kethane, got to speeds around 250ms at 5500m, didn't go any higher, and almost crashed on landing, hit at 12ms and bounced back into the air. Its about 16.5T loaded down and a TWR of 1.61. SAS is your friend.

I'm having to much fun testing this stuff to actually start the mission lol.

I have almost finished my modules and i wanted to ask about the reentry effects. As you can see at the photos below my Duna shuttle has a large heat shield for aerobraking. I made a test at Kerbin in order to ask my question and as you can see although the heat shield covers the shuttle, reentry effects are visible at the rockets of the shuttle. Is the shuttle considered burnt?

Well, earlier it was mentioned that engines themselves have a higher temp tolerance and Sturmstiger did allow engines poking through heatshields. I'm pretty sure if it's just the engines getting over heated it's not a problem. Heck, my tires from the Hab modules poke out... though I don't get any heat effects visibly I'm sure they get a little cooked.

Bear in mind Duna's heat effects aren't as serious as Kerbin's. Although I'm told in 0.21.1 it's a little less tolerant than in 0.20.2

Good news! It looks like I'll have Kerbals on Duna before day 1000 after all. I've got four launches unaccounted for prior to the last available ejection window.

Only one launch in this episode, but lots of other stuff going on.

I eject three ships to Duna including the behemoth Space Truck by Four.

I shuffle more fuel around from my Kethane mining operation.

And finally launch an additional pusher for use in the Kerbin system.

See it all in

Glad to hear it misanthropia66, at least with so few on Duna they won't feel crowded. It's a very elite club! :)

Oh, and I didn't notice whether you caught it on your video or not, but that first launcher you showed at the beginning.... you know you put that second senior docking port on upside down? The one you picked instead of a decoupler. Just to let you know. (I'm assuming since it was on the launcher that that part is way behind you... but just in case it's still relevant).

Nice to see you doing well too Keithstone. I admit I haven't had as much luck as you have with the robotics. I like the double reentry/landing legs on the Big Gulp, but I guess the Infernal Robotics is more stable than the Damned Robotics I'm using. Mine would bend pretty easily if a butterfly landed on them, let alone use them for legs! I tried to do a heat shield with holes in it, rotating so the engine's exhaust went through the holes during burns, then rotated back to protect the engines during reentry. Worked fine... until I tried an aerobrake. The thing didn't actually come off but wobbled so much it was intersecting the engines heavily!

LOL! Well, I was three martinis in. No harm, though. The ship launched fine and completed its mission. The upside down docking port eventually burned up in Kerbin's atmosphere. All evidence of the debacle, except for the conclusive video evidence, was destroyed.

You can rest assured, however, that the higher ups at the ThreeMartini space program will launch a full investigation. Heads will roll. After which, gin will flow (while a bottle of dry vermouth sits quietly in the corner).

And I want to thank you once again for those detachable heatshields. Brilliant. Pure genius. Mine are better though :P.

Caught your vid this morning and I like your heatshields. True, you need a smaller diameter than I do making them slightly easier to cut down on the weight. Putting my four Hitch-hiker modules in a square pattern has proven a pain, making it need way too large a heatshield, though it did make it more stable for driving.

Oh, and more aerobraking goodness as the third ITV makes it back to Kerbin, second on a non-hohmann transfer. Looks like Epsilon, Zeta and Eta will be up for the next window to Duna!

(Edit: By the way, is anyone else having trouble with the forum posts since they had the update the other day? I have no icons for inserting pictures, links etc and have to hunt for old posts, copy the code and paste it in here and alter it.)

I, too, am having these issues. They also coincided with the recent forum maintenance / update.

I was looking for somewhere to post about it but I don't see a forum specific forum anywhere. Plus in all the other forums I haven't noticed anyone else commenting on it. Maybe it's an erratic problem? Though it's been solid for me for, what? Three days now is it? Hmm. Hope it's solved soon. I think I'm going to see if I can find somewhere suitable to post about it.

(EDIT: Sal_vager answered on the support forum. It's a known problem they are trying to fix, so it's not just us :) )
