Jool Aerocapture Altitude

Recommended Posts

There is no specific aerocapture altitude, it depends on how fast you are moving when you enter the Joolian system. Most of my Jool aerobrakes have been around 116km-119km for Laythe orbit. You can either quicksave and see what works or you can use this: http://alterbaron.github.io/ksp_aerocalc/ which should give you the periapsis you need to achieve a given apoapsis.

If i were you, i would go with something like 40000m for capture, 70000m for high brake, and about 90000m for low brake. It is high if you are further than vall, low if less than vall, and capture is moving at escape velocity.

Aerobraking in Jool's atmosphere at less than 100km will almost invariably result in your ship meeting an unpleasant end.
