Where to start with a rover?

Recommended Posts

I've got a dilemma, I'd love to explore Minmus and the Mun with a rover (or two) before I truly leave Kerbin's influence to Duna or Eve.

However, I'm about as creative as a sack of rocks and can't seem to slap together a decent rover that I can attach to a small rocket. Whenever I try to get building, I simply can't get a practical frame put together.

Any help on rover basics is much appreciated, in terms of how they're thrown together and deployment as well.

I'd use the initial rover part if it wasn't so gosh darn small, as well. I want to have a kerbal ride the rover comfortably, above all.

Is there a central rover sharing thread that I'm missing so I can take a look at others to get ideas?

Feel free to share your own pics to hopefully get some creative juices flowing as well, no fanciness needed.

I posted this in another thread on the external seats, I quite like my little rovers.

Just a warning, its not stock: the personal rover uses the battery from the KSPX pack and the ISA gps unit (so the kerbals know where they are going), but I could make a stock one if desired.

I couldn't find a place to attach them here so I just uploaded them here:

http://maackey.us/ksp/craft/Perver.craft (from my subassembly folder)

http://maackey.us/ksp/craft/Perver-test.craft (the actual craft I used to make/test it)

The deployment isn't perfect by any means, but they are light enough to be shoved around by the kerbals if anything bad happens.

I know there used to be a big rover megathread before the forums went down. Didn't have seats then but tons of people still managed the same effect with ladders :P

Here's the Rover megathread: Rovers ahoy.

As far as creative design goes I've found it easiest to mimic either real world vehicle examples or animals. A crab-like rover is quite good on the surface of low-gravity moons since the wide base prevents it flipping over. Always build and test your rovers on Kerbin by taking a spin around the KSC, it'll help you spot silly things like forgetting to put batteries or solar panels on the thing.

In terms of deployment, I've always used a skycrane, where the rover is held beneath the delivery vehicle and deployed when it touches down. I then usually send the skycrane part off into oblivion with the fuel that's left in it.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
