Welcome to the forums!

Avatars, signatures, and other forum goodies come once you've made a certain number of posts and a moderator has verified that you're not a spambot. It's a security measure of sorts, from what I gather.

Speaking of tutorials, feel free to check out the Drawing Board (link in my sig) for some useful reference materials, some of which have been especially created for new players. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the How To section of the forums, either; most of the people who frequently post there will be more than willing to share their accumulated knowledge to answer them.
