Having trouble figuring out how to get my rover up to the Mun.

So I built this nice rover with a variety of scientific bits tacked onto it, but I'm having trouble figuring out how I'm gonna get it onto the Mun and Minmus without building the rocket in a weird way. I tried flipping up the rover on its side and building onto it from there, but when I went to put landing legs on it, the legs were oriented cylindrically towards the "sides" of the rover, rather than around the bottom of the rocket's fuel tank. I could try building the rocket under it, but getting it off of the rocket's nose and safely onto the surface seems like a challenge. can anyone tell me what I should do?

Well the main issue is that the seat is on the top, so the only way I could think of it coupling to something is from the bottom. I tried connecting it to a fuel tank sideways (building the rover first) but that screwed up the orientation of connecting parts.

Here is a picture of my normal moon/planet explorer quite a few iterations ago. Now I have a more universal docking package and Ion drive engines to get it to pretty much anywhere I want it without the use of extra pushers if I so desire. I don't have a current picture of it in it's current build but here is a picture of an older version that went to Minmus...

But basically it's a car with a transport system overhead. This way you can undock the car and go drive around. When you get done, you pull under the transport and reconnect to the docking port. Done by lowering the landing legs to raise the car. But you basically get the idea of how from the photo.

One thing to note about these type vehicles, laziness will eat your lunch here. Do it right and don't get lazy in the engineering.

There's nothing wrong with doing it upside down... there's no up or down in space, you could just decouple and re-orient it before landing. Here's the way I did it:

Once I detached it from the lander I had a sort of Skycrane land it, like this:
