How to use RemoteTech?

I've never used RemoteTech before, and I'm really confused. I'm not sure what to do, and what parts to use. Right now I'm trying to set up an interplanetary coms array, but only the KSC is able to send signals. Am I doing something wrong?

At the beginning, only KSC has communication capability.

You can do three things to enable comms on a vessel:

1) Put an omnidirectional antenna on it. I suggest using a di-pole antenna, as it has a range of 5Mm.

2) Add a directional antenna, like a satellite dish. To enable a sat-dish you have to both open it (most of them start out folded for transport) and target another vessel (or planet), then switch to the other vessel and target back.
