Why Buzz Aldrin was not chosen to be first man on the moon

Recommended Posts

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_Aldrin

"According to different NASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the Moon's surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronauts inside the compact lunar landing module, it was easier for the commander, Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft."

Aldrin was smart and very talented. He was the first to master doing anything useful on EVA. It made sense for him to be the first.

It was not the seating, NASA was just being polite. It had to do with temperament. They felt more comfortable with Armstrong having the honour of being first. I think they made the right decision. I like how he was quite humble about it, in the sense he just felt he was doing his job, doing his duty as part of a big team. I also like how he rarely did interviews or try to capitalise on it in any way. It give him a mythical aura of sorts. He also did not do product endorsements...

... now imagine if that was Armstrong.

I heard that Neil Armstrong humbleness was the reason that he was selected as commander and set first step on the Moon, i heard also about another key factor Neil Armstrong had personal tragedy he lost child and NASA officials was pity for him

I did a report on Neil Armstrong earlier this year, this is because Neil was a civilian, why Buzz was in the military, and according to NASA, it would be more apealing for a civilian to be first on the moon then a military officer.

As for why we choose Jeb to be first on the Mun? Just because Bill and Bob scream too much.

Another issue. During Gemini, Buzz made a rather risky suggestion, when the ADTA "alligator" issue came up, of doing a risky EVA, floating over to the ADTA, and cutting loose the wires with a pair of pliers (how very Jeb). Frank Borman was furious at the idea and almost recommended that this sort of risk taking by astronauts should be grounds for err, grounding. I read this in Buzz's own semi-biography entitled "Men from Earth". He explained that he didn't feel it to be a risk at the time, but he also felt that Borman was really simply vehement towards any kind of "wild" ideas he had--remember, he had the reputation and nickname of "Dr. Rendezvous", because he was so obsessed with rendevous techniques, it was all you'd ever eventually talk with him about, even at parties. :D
