Kerbal Tower Crane

Recommended Posts

I'm not one for putting all kind of attachments on my base or station modules to allow me to connect them, so I've been working on ways to lift base modules into place without rockets or the like, as I've pretty well covered the skycrane angle in the past. And thus, I present the 40m Kerbal Tower Crane, powered by Quantum Struts, Damned Robotics, and (of course) Kerbal Attachment System. Of course, I just dump it on the runway and then pull it into position, but getting this monstrosity to the surface of another body (or simply farther away on Kerbin) is not an exercise I wish to try for the time being.

It is (relatively) easy to right. Lower the base struts, then use a smaller rover-based construction vehicle to lift the top end of the crane about ten meters off the ground. Then a Kerbal runs about, attaching the guy-wires as far away as possible at 90* angles and the top one is pulled tight so as to support the weight of the tower while the side ones keep it from swinging into the ground as the rover-crane pulls away. The top and bottom feet are then retracted, leaving the side feet as a pivot point to right the tower. By retracting the top winch and extending the bottom winch, the crane can carefully and slowly be lifted vertical. Once vertical, the bottom stay cables can be anchored by using the eject function on the winches. The boom and rotatron are secured by strategically placed quantum strut guns while in lift mode and ballast is provided by a winch attached at the short end of the boom.

The truck weighs about thirteen tonnes as pictured.
