sirkut

Quick idea, that I'm throwing out there since sirkut was awesome enough to make the docking washers when I suggested something similar last time.

I've seen an implementation of impact absorption airbags as landing legs previously but I think controllable ones would be super. To be honest, as plugin developers you guys are far better placed to make them actually work more realistically too - in the previous parts, the airbags simply had high impact tolerance so the airbags often survived crashes while the payload inside smashed.

I can add a bottom node connector to the rotatron. I will keep surface attach however.

I think these would work somewhat better as separate parts (that is, separate config files for the same model) -- surface attach no bottom node, and no surface attach bottom node. The reason is that it's pretty tricky to get the nodes to snap on a small part when it wants to surface attach, particularly when you're working in a cramped cargo bay or in a cloud of small parts...

Might have a bug report: The free washers are always free, regardless of "engage lock" or not, and vice versa - the other ones are never not locked.

And what's more scary than a rocket-powered Ferris wheel? A rocket powered Ferris wheel that's CHASING YOU.

I must have a deficiency. I'm making a whole family of amusement park rides, it seems. Here's an early .. pirate ship type ride (?) prototype.

I likely missed something obvious, but I am having some trouble getting this mod to work. When i install it i get the washers and the adjustable rail, but i get none of the other parts, the hinges, pistons are all missing, they're not in the part directory. Can someone help me out? I'm too dumb to figure it out on my own.

If you mean the original DamnedRobotics pack, you need to download that pack from the original source, make a slight ammendment to each part (add "PART {" to the first line, and "}" to the bottom), place them in GameData, and then they should work. This has been stated several times; however, the guys have come out with a new version recently with replacement parts for all of the DamnedRobotics pack that work great and don't require any manual modification. The latest download should have them (0.7)

Sometimes this appears to be the case, other times the rotation does appear to be locked. On the odd occasion strange and unexpected things happen.

The above uses IR and MechJeb. It has two free washers, one at the front of the command pod, the other at the rear of the command pod.

Launch it in the default configuration, free washers unlocked, and you may see some rotation.

Launch it with the washers locked (action key 3 to toggle) and you probably will not see any rotation on the way to orbit. Once in orbit you may see the front, the rear or both start to rotate and on the odd occasion, usually at the start of the circularisation burn, the solar panels will spontaneously explode!

Anyway, that was a test using command pod rotation to rotate the centre section but this experiment proved to be much more interesting so I may as well share it...

Using IR, MechJeb and KAS.

When energised the KAS electromagnets appear to be attracted to Kerbin's magnetic field (certainly the south pole). Put this ship into orbit, assume a normal attitude, press 2 to activate the KAS magnets and watch as this 'electric motor' spins the centre section :) Key 1 opens the solar panels, you may need these.

Try downloading the zip again. You may have an older version. Don't get it from github right now.

The Free docking washer doesn't lock. I've mentioned this in the OP. Now I have put it in bold. I'll add it to the part description in the next update.

Is this a bug carried over from DR? Perhaps if the intention is for them not to lock, then the options and action groups should be removed in their case?

The locking feature is something I added and was never in DR. In TouhouTorpedo's multiwheel pack he included a Bearing part which is a free moving rotatron and that's where I got the inspiration for the free moving one. I haven't looked into removing the action groups just yet but I will try to put it in the next update.

Thanks for reposting this. I just now went thru 60+ pages of this thread trying to glean this information. I thought I had read what you stated earlier, but simply could NOT find it :(

The instructions, with pictures, is in my original post on how to get damned robotics to work with my plugin.

Sirkut - even the locking washers don't seem to unlock is perhaps the more surprising thing. Is that intentional? The context menu makes me think I should be able to switch them between free and locked.

The standard docking washers will let you lock and unlock them. It's a flag that get toggles within the plugin. They should work because I haven't done anything with that code. Test it with the hinges and see if you get the same result. When it doubt get the new update.

Roger. I will run some tests later. I almost wonder if when, for example, there's a lot of torque from a spinning Ferris wheel, that the locking doesn't work. Hmmm.

Now keep on mind the free docking washer will not lock.

Yup. But I have messed with both so that in the rocket powered Ferris wheel I would be able to lock the wheel allowing the rotating parts to move the arms around slowly for kerbal loading - then unlock for rocket spinning doom! Anyway, will try some controlled tests.

I don't think locking is meant to work that way, otherwise there would be no need for a free spinning washer. Isn't locking just a way to disable motion commands from affecting a given robotics part, not make them free spinning?

Correct its to prevent accidental movement of the part. I found that I would hit the wrong button so I made something that would prevent me from doing that.

Any chance on getting a folding piston part? I don't know what the thing is called, but there's a hydraulic lifter thingy you see at construction sites that has cross-hatch support beams that life the thing up much higher than twice the original height.
