Mun Orbit scenario... help?

Recommended Posts

v 0.20.2.186 I can't for the life of me dock the lander back to the command module. The command module's SAS don't work and it's rcs is off center, and for some reason yaw/pitch/roll do not work in docking mode... so it's a huge headache trying to switch back and forth between docking and staging and to try to stop it's slight movements with no SAS.

Any ideas on how I can complete this?

SAS only stops rotation. ASAS would hold the other movements down. ...can you build a recovery vehicle to go rescue your kerbals? it does sound like your lander will be unable to dock without a LOT of delta-V in RCS to match the movements of the command module.

I'm not good at docking - someone with more docking skills than i might have a better alternative.

awesome possum,

At the main menu, try setting the 'translation' movements over to the number pad. ie: 8=up, 4=left, 6=right, 5=down, 9=forward, 1=backward. This will allow you to make translation movements as well as pitch, roll, and yaw movements without taking your hands off either controls.

the problem i'm seeing is that translation movements will not work for me in staging, and pitch, roll, and yaw do not work when i'm docking mode. i have made sure they're both keybound in both modes.. they just flat out won't move the module at all.

i'm wondering if it's a bug or supposed to do that.

I noticed something else in using the Nav Ball and control keys. They work directly when the Nav Ball heading is at 0. Otherwise, they affect the space ship according to the rotation which can get confusing as the controls affect the ship differently and also seem to work backwards at times depending on the heading rotation reading.

awesome possum you can use all your RCS controls in staging mode. I'd advice you to not swap between the modes, I used to swap as well but then got used to docking 'twohanded'. WASD pitch/yaw QE rotation HN forward/back IJKL translation - all in staging mode.

If you insist on docking mode you can press space to swap between translation and rotation for WASD.

+1. It takes a bit, but after a while two-handed WASD IJKL dockings in staging mode are the norm, at least for me. Usually with fine controls (Caps Lock) on.

Yeah, if you're talking about the Stock Scenario, here's the problem.

IIRC, the Lander Module doesn't have any RCS fuel or thrust blocks. It's just the target which is why RCS on the LM doesn't work. It's not there.

Secondly, the , Command Module has RCS, but no ASAS. I'm pretty sure the scenario was around in v0.18, where the RCS translation was broken in 18.1, so the translation controls on the CM are a little off the COM, which induces the undesired pitch & yaw. And because there is no ASAS, there's nothing to try and maintain the heading during translation operations. So switching to docking mode does nothing to help maintain attitude, it only remaps the controls, because there's no ASAS.

So, the upshot is, the Mun Orbital Docking scenario is docking in hard mode, so I'd recommend staying in staging mode, and using the combination of both keysets (IJKL) for translation, and (ASWD) for fixing you Yaw/Pitch whenever you try to translate. Accomplish this despite the broken RCS, and you'll be golden for any other docking operation ever.
