Sound like you just reached the limit of floating point calculations. On Mandelbrot programs, you get huge pixilation of the picture when you have exceeded the ability of the floating point processor to calculate extremely small numbers. On other games, unless there is error checking, you will hit an overflow value and crash the program.

Nothing unusual. Something that may be fixed if KSP enable interstellar travel in which case, they could change the distance value to something like astronautical units, distance based upon the orbital diameter of Kerban instead of kilometers, or even light years.
