Forcing a rover built in SPH to work in VAB

Recommended Posts

Built a nice rover. Problem is I can't get parts to connect right after moving it over to the VAB. I went into its .craft file and changed it to be in the VAB. Plus when I launch it, it says it's not a rocket.

The reason I built it in the SPH, it's made for the type of rover I've built.

Also when I end the flight, it tries to stick it back in the Spaceplane Hanger instead of the Vehicle Assembly Building.

I'm thinking all I need to do is attach a probe or a pod, and it will think it's a Rocket. But I used the Mk1 Cockpit. I'm thinking I have to remove it to think it's a rocket, and if I add it back it'll think it's a spaceplane again. If so, that utterly sucks, because that cockpit is a perfect Rover cockpit.

Time for a "is your computer plugged in sort of question". You say you went into the craft file and changed it from SPH to VAB, right? Did you then cut the file out of the SPH directory and paste it into the VAB directory?

I assume you did; just covering the bases here...

Yeah, I did. I moved the file from my saves, SPH into VAB, then went into the .craft file and changed the type to VAB. I should had mentioned that. My bad.

My problem is, say the wheels. I do 2x symmetry, get one wheel on right, the other wheel is on upside down.

EDIT: I tried to remove the front and have a probe instead. It still treats it as a Spaceplane. Argo, I have to rebuild the entire dang thing all over again in the VAB.

Oh well.

This is just my experience, but I made a decently complex 9-Kerbal transport in the SPH, copied the .craft into the VAB folder (without editing the file), and it worked just fine, allowing me to build a launcher. Granted, I didn't try to edit the rover at all in the VAB, but I haven't experienced the problems of others.

That sounds kinda like a bug to be honest... not sure about a fix or workaround. I do know that the types of symmetry are different between the two and can break things if trying to edit one type in the other editor. Here's what I do to get around this when making rovers:

I start with a probe core, and attach a docking port or decoupler to it, and then start building the rover starting with the docking clamp on the other side... this way, I can use subassembly loader to grab the entire rover below the docking clamp, and save it as a subassembly to be imported into other ships inside the VAB. This only works because the root piece is NOT on the rover, but on the part the rover attaches to, thus allowing me to remove the rover and duplicate or attach it anywhere else I please.

If you don't have subassembly loader and still want to import it into an existing rocket or lifter file, you can copy the internals of the craft file of the rover (not including the header) and append it to the end of the craft file of the rocket you want to attach it to... then you'll be able to grab it in the VAB and attach it.
