Regarding the large number of engines causing reliability issues, I give you the most successful, reliable space launch system ever developed by human kind:

There's only 10 engines in that picture, five of them small ones for control only. Number of nozzles≠number of engines.

Which differs in reliability from most other space launch systems by about .1 or .2 percent. Big fat hairy deal. (And by the standards of any other branch of engineering, it's an absolute piece o' krep.)

When launching a rocket of a few million dollars, even the .1 and .2 percents counts.
