Duna Science Laboratory - Curiosity Rover + Atlas V Rocket

Recommended Posts

This is it. Finally. The Duna Science Laboratory. Atlas V Replica. Curiosity Rover. Skycrane descent stage. Cruise Stage. It's here.

MECHJEB IS NEEDED!!! SORRY THAT I WROTE "STOCK"!!!

Atlas V Launch Vehicle

In this case, I used a Atlas V 541. In contrast to the Atlas V from the Skylab project it has enlarged Boosters and a really enlarged upper stage, this time with a Skipper engine because only this (and the mainsail :D) has enough power. This upper stage has three functions:

-1400 m/s while ascent

-100 m/s for orbital ignition (for raising the periapsis)

-1030 m/s for transferring to Duna.

The first stage remained the same with very much fuel and 2 Skipper Engines.

This is the launch of Atlas V 541. The fairings can clearly be seen.

Here a screenshot during transfer burn to Duna.

Curiosity Rover

This is a normal-sized rover with a few features. In contrast to most other rovers it has only one light. It's power is guaranteed by Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators. It has a "arm" with a reflection of Curiositiy's characteristic camera, in this case a RCS port.

Skycrane Descent Stage

Well, here I can't say much. It's just a Skycrane how evryone else uses it. A few tanks and 4 radial engines. Not more.

Cruise Stage

The Cruise Stage is mainly powered by RCS, but it has also an Oscar-B Fuel Tank with 4 LV-1 engines. While transferring to Duna and reentry in its athmosphere the rover and the descent stage are in a small Box.

At the end, I have to say sorry again. I forgot to make Screenshots on Duna. Sorry for that.

i tried to download the Whole Assembly but it comes up with

"File Belongs to Non-Validated Account.

The resource you are trying access belongs to an account that has not yet been validated"

Well you might did this while I was changing the file for the update but I will check this

I like the Atlas V, but the rover really doesn't look like Curiosity. Good work though :P

Well you might know that it's impossible to make the "arm" of curiosity in KSP. I tried to make a Camera-Replica , but it doesn't look such good as in real. And the back of the rover (with the RTG): I wanted to make this with structural Panels, but then it doesn't fit into the Launch Vehicle.

I really love the fairings. What was the process of making them, think you can make a short tutorial? :)

It was quite difficult to make the 2 fairings into each other, unfortunaly I haven't got a Program to make Videos :(
