Space Age Throwback: Kerbal War 1

Recommended Posts

Here's another challenge that combines space age technology with World War 1 ideas. The challenge is to build a plane (bi-plane or tri-plane) that would resemble that of a WW 1 fighter. You must than fly it and demonstrate its abilities. Here's the rules!

Rules:

Must be a bi plane or a tri plane. Neither design will be scored higher because of it.

Must contain at least one Kerbal! If it doesn't have a Kerbal than it won’t count!

All mods are aloud but you cannot refine or use a pre-made design if a mod(s) comes with it.

It must be able to fly. (Obviously)

Must have one engine only! You will lose 20 points for every other engine you add to it. The only exception is if they are used from braking and/or weapons.

Must contain less than 200 parts and have less than 10 stages. (Easiest of them all right here)

If you use all stock than you will be competing against those who also use stock. Mod people with mod people, stock people with stock people.

Those are the rules! Here's how its scored!

Scoring:

Take-off Speed:

less than 30m/s 30pts

30m/s - 60m/s 20pts

61m/s - 85m/s 10pts

86m/s or more 5pts

Maneuverability:

Pin point maneuverability 30pts

Tight maneuverability 20pts

Normal maneuverability 10pts

Lose maneuverability 5pts

No maneuverability 0pts

Engine Type:

Ion Engine 40pts

Efficient Rocket Engine 30pts

Inefficient Rocket Engine 20pts

Efficient Jet Engine 10pts

Inefficient Jet Engine 5pts

Weapons (Optional and points for each type and amount the aircraft is holding when air born)

Air-Air Missile 30pts

Air-Ground Missile 20pts

Guided (As in it has wings) Bomb 15pts

Unguided (no wings) Bomb 10pts

Bonus Points:

Extra Kerbal 10pts per kerbal

Hit a selected target with a weapon (Not including lasers and must be non-created) 10pts per hit

Jebediah Kerman is pilot (must not be edited in) 25pts

Accidentally Encounter the Kraken 30pts

Land on water and remain intact (I'm not sure if it’s possible but hey there's people that are better than me at this) 50pts

There's the Scoring so here is my attempt at it! It also contains an over view of this! (currently being processed)

With the first shown design I scored 10 + 20 + 20=50 pts!

With the second design I scored 20 + 20 + 10 + 20x2 + 15x2 =120 pts!

Good Luck and have fun!

Scores as of 7/18/13

Top Mod Aircraft:

Kerbies_are_my_Minions: 295 points

Darren9: 290 points

Top Stock Aircraft:

Tarsus: 195 points

Why only Bi and Triplanes? I think WW1 saw some Monoplanes as well...

Maybe you could do some sort of scoring like with the engines?

I also think you should mandate open cockpits.

I have this thing lying around If you were willing to accept monoplanes, I'm pretty confident It would fit in, it has a tailskid after all :)

The reason why is because anyone can go into KSP and make a monoplane. Its more of a challenge to make a good bi and tri plane

Well I have added a set of wings, so I'm good to go right?

Pics or didn't happen

This should be 20+20+10+20*4= 130

Also hit VAB 4 times, that would make 170.

I can fly a circle between the around VAB without hitting SPH or the Tracking Station, does that qualify as tight maneuverability?

EDIT: also tried landing on water and failed hard (Tail and nosecone went KIA)

I just so happen to have a bi plane laying around so I did your little fun.

I don't tippically like simulating war in ksp, so... lets call this Jebs dream.

fyi, could hardly hear you over your plane.

Take-off Speed:

30m/s - 60m/s 20pts

Maneuverability:

Tight maneuverability 20pts

Engine Type:

Efficient Rocket Engine 30pts

Weapons (Optional and points for each type and amount the aircraft is holding when air born)

Air-Air Missile 30pts *4

Air-Ground Missile 20pts *2

Bonus Points:

Extra Kerbal 10pts

Hit a selected target with a weapon (Not including lasers and must be non-created) 10pts per hit *6

Jebediah Kerman is pilot (must not be edited in) 25pts

And didn't count any points for my attempted water landing. but I think it was pretty good. ;)

grand total of 325?

Here is my first attempt... Ion engine with enough battery power and solar panels to cruise at high speeds and engage in dogfights at max speed for long enough to win. It gets off the ground at around 22 m/s and turns on a dime. It did technically fly with 3 kerbals on board but only 2 survived testing. No weapons yet but I have 69 parts left. I'll submit when I have successfully tested weapons and destroyed some ground units.

That will count and your points are right.

I saw an efficient jet engine which is 10 points. So it would really be 305pts. So far that is the highest.

oh sorry, i erased the wrong line. why more points for rockets anyways? I wish there where smaller decouplers to launch just the seps. lol it was fun, though. no points for ejection seating? :P

I don't think modded parts should get bonus points. that's a little unfair to us that roll only stock craft. :(

oh, and I guess since my bombs would count as guided bombs and not air to ground missiles because they are not powered, so knock another 5 each off for that, so 295. (though all it would take is a pair of seps to make them powered)

sorry, it was late in the night when I did this.

I've got an entry ready. The rear facing gunner (Jeb) has a swivelling canon that can scare any threats out of the sky with small puffs of RCS compressed air, there's four control-surface stabilized missiles which aren't air or ground specific - just anything that's big enough and close enough, and four control-surface stabilized bombs on the bottom.

I could have,

Take-off Speed: 20

Maneuverability: 20

Engine Type: 30

Weapons: 180?

Bonus Points: 75

It'll carry a lot more weapons but doesn't look like it should so I didn't stick them on :)

Take-off Speed ~50m/s: 20pts (On both land and water)

Pin point maneuverability 30pts

Engine Type: Propeller 30pts

3 X Guided (As in it has wings) Bomb 15pts

Jebediah Kerman is pilot (must not be edited in) 25pts

Land on water and remain intact: 50pts

20 + 30 + 30 + 3x15 + 25 + 50 = 200pts

I have hit the VAB several times on test flights but sadly did not get any pics with Jeb at the helm.

Just made an update that should make things far for those of you who like to fly stock! All planes using mods are competing against other planes with mods and Stocks competing against stocks! If you use only stock you will need to state so somewhere. Also Lasers will not be counted anymore. Everything else still applies for both. Finally just to clarify when I said land on water I was looking for your plane floating in the water without floats. It doesn't need to take-off from the water afterwards.

Here is mine, Biplane powered by 1 rocket engine mounted underneath, 2 crew: jeb and bob, and has four unguided bombs on board. Ridiculously low takeoff speed and handling, good for low level stunts.

Video here:

Take-off Speed:

less than 30m/s 30pts

Maneuverability:

Pin point maneuverability 30pts

Engine Type:

Inefficient Rocket Engine 20pts

Weapons (Optional and points for each type and amount the aircraft is holding when air born)

Unguided (no wings) Bomb 10pts - *4 bombs

Bonus Points:

Extra Kerbal 10pts per kerbal - *1

Hit a selected target with a weapon (Not including lasers and must be non-created) 10pts per hit - *4 hits on VAB/Control tower

Jebediah Kerman is pilot (must not be edited in) 25pts

So I think that comes to 195 points, 4 bombs dropped and all hit the VAB.

It is 195 points. It looks like your using a mod for the wings so I'll put you in the mod category. Also I can't see you're engine so I'm just trusting you on that.

those aren't modded wing's their swept wing's
