This ladies and gentlemen is the Scythe my latest SSTO VTOL Drop Ship which makes use of a single turbojet engine and a lowly LV-909 rocket motor to propel itself into orbit. The glut of air intakes will keep you going at full throttle up to 30,000m perfect for a spot of air hogging. It's also a treat to fly with agile handing and well balanced controls. The most revolutionary feature is that the whole craft is built around the top docking port rather then my usual method of starting with the cockpit. This may not sound like much, but it means the Scythe can integrate with other peoples existing designs using the sub-assembly saver plugin. Yay!

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 - Go buy a joystick, if you have a joystick already go straight to instruction 2.

2 - Download the ship from here: http://snk.to/f-chpfvllj It needs to go into your space plane folder.

CONTROLS

1 - Toggle Turbo Jet.

2 - Toggle Rocket.

SSTO INSTRUCTIONS:

There are much more efficient ways of getting the Scythe into orbit but the easiest way is to fly straight up to 10,000m and pitch over to a 45* angle on your chosen heading (generally this will be 90*). As your speed increases the air pressure will force the nose of the ship down, you'll have to compensate for this by pulling back on the stick, once you reach thinner air the effect will subside. When you get to around 20,000m press 2 to light the rocket engine. At 30,000m you'll have to start cutting back on the throttle, keep the jet going as long as you can but once it runs out of air completely press 1 to shut it off and hit full throttle. At 1500m/s pitch flat to the horizon and keep the engine going until you clear the atmosphere. You can now switch command over to the docking ring and round out your orbit. If you take a look at the following video you can see how it's done.

NOTES:

Like my other designs the Scythe features a horizontal cockpit for suborbital piloting, and a docking port for navigation/orbital flight. You do have the option of using the docking port alone and flying the Scythe like a regular rocket if you wish. Landing should be done using the jet and rocket together as this helps get rid of the jet's throttle lag. It pays to keep an eye on your oxidizer level and make sure you have some left for landing/de-orbiting. The Scythe handles well at low altitude but make sure you don't use excessive horizontal speeds bellow 20,000m. The Scythe can air hog like a champion between 20,000m-30,000m and still has a little bit of puff left at just under 40,000m. ASAS should be used at all times although if you need to turn fast you can disable it temporarily.

Enjoy! :)

Good news everyone, the Fish Food Frenzy challenge is now ready! Head on down and check it out, you are also able to take part using your own designs, yay! :D

I was just messing around with your R-Type not 30 minutes ago and thought it would make a great ground-attack vehicle (if I could fly it worth a darn). Lo and behold, this black shadow deftly floats over KSC leaving chaos and debris in its wake. Beautiful as always.

Cheers! The R-Type goes like a scolded cat but the low level handing is, how can I put this diplomatically? A touch eccentric. The Scythe is a much better all rounder, excellent performance at altitude with solid handling at low altitudes. If I had to Smite my enemies I'd take the Scythe any day of the week! :)

Very nice! I love the design, simple, sleek, functional and well made videos! I did have a few questions though if you don't mind:

I noticed there were only three struts on top in the first video for the most part making it asymmetrical (and I 'assume' lopsided)... Can you explain the reasoning behind just three struts and not an equal four? Or did something happen that snapped it for the first video?

Also: What are the parts of the wings between the two ram air intakes? The things that look sort of like black solid rocket boosters?

Well spotted, I assume you saw the 3 struts on the SSTO video? That was a bit of woopsie on my part but It has been fixed now, everything is symmetrical once more. :) I think what you're seeing at the back is a ram air intake, if memory serves me correctly there's a pair of fan intakes nestled inside a pair of ram intakes, then 2 more sets of ram intakes mounted the opposite way. Hope this answers your question.

Oh, yes I can see how the title may have hit a nerve, um, yes... No offence meant. :P Those are some nice birds you've got there BTW, is the latest one modeled on an F16? :)

Cupcake...

No offence taken. Anyway, I didn't even think about modeling an F-16. Lucky guess-work, right?
