Duna Apollo Style

Recommended Posts

You know, I had so many problems (most sorted during flight, but not all) with my mission I'm considering... maybe... doing this again. However, 0.22 is downloading as we speak so I'm curious as to whether it's allowable? Usually there are some sort of game changing updates in a these things. I know, science etc, but this challenge almost certainly will be in the sandbox area anyway, so that isn't an issue.

Assuming new parts from 0.22 might change this should it be limited to 0.21? Maybe start a new one for just 0.22? Just some thoughts I'm throwing out there. (and hoping my DL doesn't stall out! Come on internet! Only another 300MB to go!)

In my first walk through of the new parts while in sandbox, there doesn't appear to be any changes that would affect how this challenge is completed. I'll leave it as-is and mark it "0.22 Approved" but will put footnotes on entries completed in 0.22.

If you want to take another run at the challenge, I'll post the score. :)

I MADE IT!!! Man, after almost two weeks, i managed to set a kerbal on the surface of Duna, and to return it safely, altough you can't say the same of my sanity.

Here is the Olympos Mission!!!

Also, what i tought reading Challenge rules:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YMCfosUyTA

(Sorry if it's in french, but it's the only one that I managed to find.)

Here, the mission!!!

Now, let's do the math.

Basic mission profile (50 points)

Addition points for standard mission goals:

3-kerbal mission +10

2-kerbal lander +10

2-stage lander with separate ascent stage (descent stage stays on Duna) +20

Launch escape system (LES) escape tower +10

Duna lander stored behind the CM during ascent +20

Lander tucked away behind some fairing +5

Perfect landing - no damage to LM +10

Dock with LM's ascent stage prior to leaving Duna's SOI +10

Ascent module de-orbited to burn up in Duna's atmosphere +5

Plant at least one flag +3

Splash-down on Kerbin (water landing) +5

Flight goals:

Complete the mission with only chemical rockets (no nukes). The KSC already has a crate of chemical rockets on hand and you get a bonus for not having to accelerate development on the nuclear engine +15

Aerobrake around Duna to achieve orbit +10

Less than 75 days from game start to Duna orbit? Launching when the game saves starts and performing a standard orbital transfer gets you into a Duna orbit 75 days from when the provided save game starts, day 129 in the game. Find a faster way to get into a Duna orbit using another transfer faster and earn +1 point for every day less than 75 days it takes to get to Duna orbit, from the starting point of day 54, where the provided save game starts (calculated by 129 - day when Duna orbit is reached). Orbit achieved on day 104, 25 points

Water sample return bonus! Land on either polar icecap AND return a sample to Kerbin (either as part of the kerballed lander or a robotic lander) +10

Rover:

At least one rover on board +5

Rovers can seat at least one Kerbal +5

Additional rovers +3 each

Distance (score for one only and counts only for a kerballed rover)

Drive beyond 10km of the lander +15

Orbital Science goals:

Deploy orbiting satellite around Duna +5

Deploy orbiting satellite around Ike +10

Duna surface science goals. Each science package must be a powered probecore with at least one scientific instrument.

Deploy one science package at landing site (on the LM itself counts, if that part of the LM stays on Duna's surface and remains powered) +5

Deploy a science package at least 2.5km from the landing site +10 (score first one only)

Deploy a science package at least 1000m +/- different alititude from LM or any other science package +15 (score first one only)

Deploy a science package at least 10km from the landing site +10 (score first one only)

Total: 299 points

Man, this was a proper challenge, at least for me. I always hated Apollo style missions to the Mun, and you can figure out my feelings about a Duna mission... But hell, I made it!!! After 4 aborted attempts.

Death Engeneering, i saw your design for the Kapricorn One challenge, and i must say it is one of the most beautiful and elegant vessels i have ever seen. Bravo!!!

I'm a bit ashamed of posting this example of ugliness after all those magnificent designs of yours...

Nonetheless, an ugly craft that can take you back home is certainly a good craft! :D

Thanks for the kind words about the KP-1 challenge! What's funny is that I always think everyone else's vessels look better. I like your rover - did it drive okay on Duna? My rovers are always rubbish..

Funny that you presented the album like a hoax... harsh ending! Not even Brubaker made it back, hehe. :) Fun to read, though. Thanks for the entry!

I like your rover - did it drive okay on Duna?

Let's just say that while ascending the hills, it handled wonderfully, but once it reached the top, it must have started believing to be a drunk dervish dancer, or something like that, and made a firm personal resolution of never, ever slow down.

I think that the wheels were not exactly aligned, and that just three of them touched the ground at the same time.

The most keen eyed of you must have noted the total absence of the rover from the final surface shots. This because I deliberately crashed and exploded and destroyed it in a cold and sweet, sweet revenge, laughing maniacally.

Well of course, that's the only reasonable response to that! I hope you gave it a few swift kicks first, just to show it who's boss?

Pretty sure that's why the devs added Whack-A-Kerbal to the game...

Whack-A-Kerbal....? What am I missing out on?!? :)

Edit: Unless you mean just blowing them up, hehe. Just because I have LES on my crewed rockets doesn't always mean I use it when something looks like it might blow up real good.

A PROCEDURE FOR THE PROPER ABUSE USAGE OF WHACK-A-KERBAL

1. Press ALT-F12.

2. When the debug menu comes up, select "Show Whack-a-Kerbal"

3. Press ALT-F12 again to close the debug menu.

4. Find annoying object. Debris is good, landscape not as satisfying. Still haven't managed to hit anything in orbit...

5. Use Whack-A-Kerbal menu to ramp size, mass and speed to the top. Select "capsule" if you feel like hitting something with a giant Tylenol.

6. Aim carefully, then press down the mouse wheel.

7. Achieve catharsis. The good kind, not the kind where they pump your stomach (unless of course you've been drinking heavily while using Whack-A-Kerbal - which is probably a good side-activity to be doing while using Whack-A-Kerbal - in which case your results may vary).

Actually had a setup for "crawlway bowling" using Whack-A-Kerbal, which I have been thinking awfully hard about turning into a challenge. If I could only post the persistence file...it would be called "Kill Bill, Volume 3".

Last thing I whacked was a TARDIS (from the TARDIS Spaceport Mod). Several TARDISes, actually...those things are hard to blow up - you have to hit them dead on.

EDIT: I should say that I had a friend who made me do that. He calls himself "The Master".

EDIT EDIT: Here - here's a video of

using Whack-A-Kerbal to good effect. The real fun starts about 2:50 in. Edited by capi3101

I have to ask, is it acceptable to use the External Command Seat in place of an enclosed pod/can for either the lander or command module? I can see potentially why not, but on the other NASA did consider plans for what basically amounted to a rocket chair for lunar travel/sample gathering (Bell and Rockwell designs for a Lunar Flying Unit), and even as an emergency return vehicle should the LM's ascent system become unavailable (Lunar Escape Systems, additional config for one of Bell's designs).

"For this mission, we will extend the original vaccuum-only landing concept of Grumman's LM to include any
command pod
in KSP."

Per the above line from the challenge rules (emphasis added), no, as a 'Command Seat' is not a 'Command Pod'. If you're trying to keep the mass down, consider using two Mk1 Lander Cans. Their combined mass is less than half the mass of Mk2 Lander-can.

Thanks for the well-thought-out challenge, Death Engineering!

All that planning and somebody forgot to power the command module. Luckily Bill Bob and Jeb were able to scrape by with the batteries they took out of Bill's Gamekerb, but it made for quite a boring trip home. It also required the burn out of Duna to hit Kerbin with no adjustment, and to hang on to the (powered) ascent module until the last possible minute.

Basic mission profile: 50 points

Three-stage, no asparagus, no SRB launch vehicle.

Start with the provided save game persistent file.

Single launch mission.

Separate command module and lander.

Powered descent + parachutes.

All stock.

Return at least one of the Kerbals that started the mission back safely to Kerbin's surface.

Additional points for standard mission goals: 108 points

+10 3-kerbal mission

+10 2-kerbal lander

+20 2-stage lander with separate ascent stage (descent stage stays on Duna)

+10 Launch escape system (LES) escape tower

+20 Duna lander stored behind the CM during ascent

+5 Lander (and rovers/probes/satellites) tucked away behind some fairing

+10 Perfect landing - no damage to LM

+10 Dock with LM's ascent stage prior to leaving Duna's SOI

+5 Ascent module de-orbited to burn up in Duna's atmosphere

+3 Plant at least one flag

+5 Splash-down on Kerbin (water landing)

No Kerbal fatalities.

Flight goals: 89 points

No SRBs.

+15 No LV-N's, no ions.

+10 Aerobrake around Duna to achieve orbit

+54 20 days 7 hours from Kerbin to Duna

+10 Water sample return bonus!

Rover: 34 points

+5 At least one rover on board

+5 Rovers can seat at least one Kerbal

+9 Additional rovers +3 each: 4 total rovers

+15 Drive beyond 10km of the lander

Orbital Science goals: 65 points

+5 Deploy orbiting satellite around Duna

+10 Deploy orbiting satellite around Ike

+5 Lander base powered with science

+10 Deploy a science package at least 2.5km from the landing site

+15 Deploy a science package at least 1000m +/- different alititude from LM or any other science package

+10 Deploy a science package adjacent (within 100m) to any anomoly

+10 Deploy a science package at least 10km from the landing site

Total score: 346 points

1925t takeoff mass.. 97 days 7 hours round-trip mission.. just wow. Perfect execution.. except for the power problem. Interesting return trajectory from Duna.. I wonder if an Eve fly-by encounter could hasten the return even more.

Seriously good mission.. and yet another high-score!

So here is what I am working on for this challenge. No hints as to what is under the fairing yet.

I have completed testing all new components and susefussuly put it into cruise mode for the burn to Duna but my launch was poor and I only had enough fuel left to get it into orbit. If I scavenge all remaining fuel I could make a Duna fly by but this was just a test mission in another save I wasn't planning to go to Duna now. I just wanted to see if the docking maneuver was possible with the very tight tolerances built into the fairing and protective crew shroud.
