Duna Apollo Style

Unless.. British_Rover proves the cake is a truth.

Nope cake is a lie. I did have a delicious cinnamon crunch bagel with honey and walnut cream cheese for breakfast this morning. That was better then cake.

I am nearly finished with the final touches of the mission now so I might be able to do it tonight. I am just building in additional redundancy to the various stages and working on some surprises.

Well it took much longer then I thought but we do have a mission. I will start a post in the mission reports sub-forum and then link to it.

Project OCAIAFNAR(Overly complicated and Incredibly Ambitions for no apparent reason) launched The Spear of Mars on a Javelin 9 heavy successfully.

The Exploratar rescue mission/scout probe successfully launched 23 hours later on a Javelin 9 standard. With all systems go on TSM Exploratar followed behind and calculations began for its secondary mission to set up communications and scout the Duna system ahead of TSM.

I need to add in descriptions to the first album but I will do that later once I start the mission report thread.

Looking great so far. Just note that the mission profile requirement is for a single-launch mission. Not sure if that's what you're doing, but just wanted to mention that. Good luck on your Duna landing!

Yeah was trying a scout mission as separate thing that I wouldn't score but I am going to have to start over. I had docking, staging and hatch bugs. I could put kerbals in a pod but then they couldn't get out for some reason. I am going to reload a new scenario and try again.

I am trying to decide if I should do a fresh install and then reinstall the mods I need just for this challenge before adding other non-necessary mods. I only need B9, docking struts and Procedural fairings for this mission.

Hi Death Engineering, can I submit my challenge?

Total mission time was 72 days from launch to return.

I really enjoyed this, putting together the launch vehicle made me cackle, it was so over the top. I needed to lift into orbit a Duna mission which had enough Delta V to lift itself into Kerbin orbit and then travel to Duna and back more conventionally.

In fact since this setup has enough to get to Eeloo and back I'm going to give that a try sometime soon...

Had to go back and forth through your photos to take in all the great design work you've done there. Escape tower/probe combo tops it, IMHO. Kudos! That was quite a burn to get to Duna... 4500m/s, was it? That would probably explain the scorching through Duna's paper-thin atmosphere.

Another new high score!! :D

Since this thread is still alive, I'm going to go ahead and bug you about the leaderboard. A couple of missions appear to have been left off of it. (I noticed because one of them is mine!)

Thanks again for the challenge...and thanks to the players who keep playing it. We've seen some creative and awesome things happen in this thread!

Leaderboard updated with beelzebub and KevinTMC challenge scores. My sincere apologies to these two players for somehow missing updating the leaderboard for their two great missions.

I spoke with my minions in the Death Engineering 'Secret Underground Laboratory' and while they didn't admit to the oversight, they seemed rather keen on helping out more.

Okay, they're cats... :D

Hi, I'm planning my mission and there are some questions:

1. Science Packages can be rovers too? And that way do I get the 10points for the science and 3 for the rover?

2. Can I deploy Science Packages from orbit with rocket/parachute?

3. Can I bring any number of rovers? :)

4. Can I use Command Seats only for the Lander?

Sorry if they were already answered but I can't re-read 110 posts! :)

1. Yes, science packages can be rovers and yes it would score for science and the rover.

2. Yes science packages can be deployed from orbit.

3. No rover limit........ :sealed:

4. Landers require a pod.

Good luck on your mission! :)

Hm, one more question: Can I use NovaPunch rockets for the launch? They are much simple and looks much better, and fits better for an Apollo-style mission. I can build Heavy lifting rockets which are capable to bring 100+ tons into LKO without Asparagus, but for me it's already boring to make such rockets... :D But I will do if you want. By the way I'm going on small-minimal now with the lander and the rovers too, I love to experience small parts nowadays, so my main ship won't be more than about 40t anyway, I guess.... :) What do you think?

Working on this at the moment. I hope to do a full Duna mission shortly :) It's similar to the Saturn "Nova" C-8 Rocket, a planned bigger version of the Saturn "5" C-5. And YES I use the old VAB because otherwise my PC would't like that. It has 8 Mainsails and (clipped) 8 Skippers in the first stage, 8 skippers in the second stage and 1 Skipper in the third. It has a 2-stage 2-man lander covered in fairings and CSM with enough fuel to slowdown without the atmosphere and flying back zo Kerbin. It has a 2 small rovers and a seperate sub-satellite for Duna an one for Ike. The payload has a 2.5 m diameter and is covered in 3.75 m fairings, which is th diameter of the third stage. The second stage has two diameters, 3.75 and 5 m. the first stage has an gigantic diameter of 7.5 m.
