Firstly, this should be in off-topic, really, but I'm no moderator, and I'm here to help :)

Now then...

Space Pirates and Zombies is an arcade-style top-down space exploration/combat game. Very fun, I recommend it.

Galaxy on Fire 2 is a bit basic, but it has a multitude of ships, weapons, and other components to choose from, as well as several star systems and planets. Unfortunately, it all starts getting to be the same procedure over and over again, mostly due to the short story. Nevertheless, it can be fun, and might be worth looking at.

Freelancer is old and I've never played it, but it still has a huge fanbase and is apparently very good. I should try it out, really.

The X series is also apparently pretty good, but again I've never played it. Scott Manley is playing through X3 at the moment.

Other than that, if you can hold out for a year and a half, plus you are willing to fork out some cash now, you have Star Citizen, currently in the early stages of development. If you back it now, you can get Alpha and Beta access in certain packages, plus a ship (or ships) to call your own. It's probably best you just go to their site and check it out: Star Citizen

I have an Advanced Starter package, and I'm really looking forward to even just the hangar module, because that means I can have a look around my ship in-engine while it sits in a hangar bay. Alpha is said to be due out around winter-time, and that will be dogfighting testing. Seriously, just go to the site and have a look, otherwise we'll be here forever

Hope this helps out a bit. If not, well, err... I tried :P

I honestly wouldn't bother. This game had great promise but after a few hours you figure out that all the missions (seriously, all of them) just amount to "Go there, kill the red ones, come back, receive bacon." It was wildly over-ambitious, went wildly over-time and over-budget and by the time the studio sold itself to Microsoft I'm sure some of the suits over there had a heart attack at the mess they found. So they told them to ship the bloody thing as it was and be done with it.

Of course everyone now blames Microsoft for that piece of junk instead of Chris Roberts, the man who drove that game and the studio behind it head first into the ground.

So I'm skeptical towards Star Citizen as it is basically Chris Roberts coming back to make good on a decade-old promise. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt: he seems to have grown up a lot over the past ten years and his humble demeanor and obvious passion for the project have really impressed me so far. Though I'm not about to entrust him with any of my money just yet

EDIT: To add something constructive to this thread - I've been killing time with Prison Architect, a great little sandbox alpha game with cutesy sprite-based characters shanking each other in the showers. Fun! Also, I'm using this silence before the 0.21 storm to go out and get some sun, because of summer.

I would reccomend wing commander privateer, as it is am excellent elite-a-like, star sector, while not finished, kept me entertained for 30 hours, and they are still early in development, planetside 2 is worth looking a if you have the sort of supercomputer that can run KSP, but Ive been playing a fair bit of torchlight, as it is quite fun hacky slashy combat.

Freelancer still has a very big fanbase and several active multiplayer servers especially those running the Discovery mod.

But be warned when you're planning to play Freelancer Discovery. The official Discovery server (Discovery GC) is VERY strict, go even slightly beyond your roll-play and you'll face serious penalties. Its a complete dictatorship that is full of backstabbing, meta-gaming and betrayal.

The only real alternative would be 'Discovery PTC relaxed RPG'. Unfortunately that server is run by an obscenely religious narcissistic incompetent moron. Trust me I know, I played on that server a long time. I was third in command and 'Trade master' of ZEN (Zoner Edgeworld Network). The oldest and without a doubt 'richest' faction there.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for here. But going by exploration alone, a couple of my recommendations:

Terraria: Fairly well known sandbox/exploration/hack-and-slash

Antichamber: An interesting title similar to portal in its first-person puzzle style gameplay.

Don't Starve: A silly little survival game.
