A question about KSP updates

Hi, so i only started playing ksp until just after the .20 update, and i was just wondering, how is the game going to update over time to reach version 1.0, I know it will be a long way off yet, but will we see another 80 or so updates or will the numbers go up in an order that reflects the developers progress chart?

cheers, joe

0.20 isn't a version that's 20% complete. It's just the 20th major update, which is why you don't see anyone refer to it as "version 0.2". With that in mind, the version that precedes 1.0 could be anything, 0.30 or 0.126 - development will take as long, and as many intermediate releases as needed.

Recently, the devs have stated that instead of doing really big updates spaced out farther apart, they will try to make quicker, but smaller updates. The 1.6 anniversary is right around now, so that gives you a clue on what it has been so far. .18 came out in very very late November, .19 came out in early march, .20 came out in late may, and .21 is right around the corner. That will give you a reasonable time scale.

I hope we don't get to 0.126. Assuming we get about 6 nicely-sized updates a year, it will take 18 years to get to that point. I think if any game is in development for 18 years someone is doing their job wrong.

That aint quite right. Games can be in perpetual development and not suffer for it. Eve online has been going for 10 years. Granted with the engine / graphic updates it is somewhat like the "grandfathers axe, my dad replaced the handle and I replaced the head" dilemma, but yeah.

Exactly! People dont seem to understand that the its not economically feasible to drag out a project. It gets costly. Most games have development cycle of 2-3 years. We will be seeing the final release in the near future i believe.

What you are missing is that EVE has a steady income every month. KSP doesnt.

I think that KSP will live till 0.30 or so,when most of the planned things will be implemented..It just becomes unprofitable for Squad.Considering we have 4 big devs in the team (not counting artists)(Mu,Dan,C7,HarvesteR),and I think that each of them could have pay around 650EURO per month, which is 2600EURO for all, which means around 150 people need to buy KSP per month to just pay all theese big devs.

That especially makes sense since HarvesteR stated some time ago that most of the content that was initially planned will probably instead be implemented through expansion packs. Economically, it does make a lot more sense.

I forgot, how long has dwarf fortress been in development for? ;P

All that aside, there is no way of knowing when the next update will be out or how many updates the game will see during the course of the year. Updates have been coming irregulary at best and with the recent changes in dev version distribution among devs there is no telling how long it will take till 0.22 comes out. All we can do is wait...

Have a nice day!
