Look, I run a dangerous space program, and I like those guys. If we could maybe make it so they aren't the default victims volunteers for my crew, that would be swell.

I would like NO defaults as all, if it's going to be permadeath I like to pick the crew for earch mission.

Just select them out. They aren't the default themselves, the default to fill your ship are the first at the top of the list.

Or, Store them somewhere safe, but keep em happy. Do something like, jool orbit or (very) low sun orbit.

if you go to the Space Center view... and click the launch pad to select your ship and your crew... you can change them. if you launch from the VAB... it seems to bypass that screen and auto select them from the top of the list.

Not really, there is a third tab next to action groups called "crew" you can pick them from there
