The new SAS and ASAS?

So...someone help me get this straight.

1. SAS is now built-in feature of probes and command pods.

2. ASAS....what happened to it? (I actually always thought ASAS can only try to keep course using gimbals and control surfaces, it can't apply force).

3. What is the difference between the Inline Torque Wheels thingy and the other module in Control? They both have the same stats?

4. There is no need for ASAS anymore? Or...when? I see it still has the 2.5m module in game, but why would i use it instead of torque wheel modules and SAS?

1. All of the command objects have the ability to control reaction wheels, gimbals, and control surfaces.

2. "ASAS" or smart control is built into all of the command objects. Set a heading and it will attempt to use the reaction wheels, gimbals, and control surfaces to maintain the heading.

3. Nothing, they are now the same, just some might have different stats.

4. This has not been explained, you can look in the part.cfg files for the objects, but the settings don't make sense. I think they just over looked that part.

In general the 0.21.1 system is SUPPOSED to be a more scale-able version of the old method. Allowing the user the add/remove control authority force to his creations. Its in the early stages right now, it mostly works but there are still a few issues.

I want to get this straight. So I dont need to use the old ASAS parts? I was using them yesterday before I saw the posts about the new SAS. The old ASAS are now Inline Torque Wheels? Do I need to still shut down the Gimbals on the outer rockets, when I have a lot of rockets (like more than 6 or 7? I read the Thread: New SAS functionality and You!, and just want to make sure that I am clear on that.

This should be a thing of the past. The new SAS doesn't jitter about, fluttering with all it's control surfaces and/or gimbals. It should in almost any case just hold the course, maybe the most extreme craft reach the limits of this system, so far everything seems to behave quite tamely.

Honestly, both of the two old ASAS parts are useless since the SAS module is included in every command part, excepted for the seats. So no, you don't need them, just more torque wheels if you want to. And You shouldn't need to shut down the gimbals, as often, I found out it still brings more stability when I shut them off sometimes on big launchers.

I thought the old ASAS are the torque wheels. I will search through the parts and try to find them if they are not, but I thought I read that the old ASAS's are the torque wheels?

The old SAS part is a torque wheel, the old 1,25m ASAS is a torque wheel with the new SAS function, and the old 2,5m ASAS is just a part that has the SAS function, but no torque wheel. And that's why they are useless, because all comand pods already have the SAS function. Adding the simple torque wheel (old SAS) is the best option because it's the one that weights the less of all parts.

Avionics is still just a SAS part...probably in case you wanted to add SAS for a Command Chair.

Not quite true. It had no torque of its own, but it would use the torque from command/probe parts. It would not use torque from SAS parts.

I think that's because adding SAS to all the probe parts happened in 0.21.1 which they had pressure to release, so they didn't take the time to sort out all the issues. At this time, there's only one way to have a controllable craft that doesn't already have SAS, and that's the external seat.

There is no ASAS any more from the point of view of the game engine, just a few parts that call themselves ASAS.

Wow! HAHAH! Now I am confused!!! Should I then use both an ASAS for the reaction wheel and an SAS for the a torque wheel!!! I think I m getting dizzy!! HAHAHAH!! :confused::confused:

There is no difference, they are the same.

Ignore the name of the parts.

Control parts, like capsules contain the brains and a reaction wheel.

SAS/ASAS parts contain reaction wheels of varying sizes.

Add your control part (capsule), then test your ship. If you need more command authority add another reaction wheel (an ASAS or SAS part, they are the same).

They obviously need to sort out the old (and now useless) ASAS parts. The yellow, 1.25m Inline advanced stabilizer and the grey 1.25m inline reaction wheel have exactly the same function but different masses. And the 2.5m ASAS part has the same function too, but is just bigger and somehow lighter.

The short answer is that the two old ASAS parts (the yellow 1.25m ring and the grey 2.5m ring) have no purpose other than aesthetics. If you want more torque just use the grey, 1.25m inline reaction wheel.

Yeah, but it has the same amount of torque as the 1.25m part. That's why I said it's only useful for looks. They should probably add more torque to it and increase the mass a lot.
