I love the KSP forums, but I dislike almost all other forums

Here's why... when I read through most other forums, all I see are ill-conceived statements that are inconsiderate to the feelings or opinions of others. One particulary extreme example is military photos... http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?229257-Japan-to-mull-pre-emptive-strike-ability-in-defense-update/page4 I mean, I know that some people say stupid things, but some forums are just a complete waste of precious bandwidth... What forums do you hate the most, and why? I'd like to here your stories. :) (One person summed my opinions up pretty well http://www.aneclecticmind.com/2008/04/11/why-forums-suck/#.UfQN_42cdqU)

What forums do you hate the most, and why?

No, i'm not joking. At first, this forum was okay. Everything was just fine. But over time the moderators have transformed into what they are today: absolute screwballs. Some of them close threads without giving a reason. How does the creator and/or commentors know what they did wrong and how to improve on it? It's like going to an artist and saying their painting sucks. No reasons, nothing to improve on. Same with these signature "Deal With It" things they use when somebody violates the signature rules. At least tell them what they did wrong so they can opt for a different choice of words or find a way to shrink things down.

There's a whole list of things I could write, but an essay big enough to adequately express and cntain all of my frustrations and hates would be at least 1 terabyte in size. Let's just say 50 to 75 percent of it would be a very passionate rant about chobit-389. The rest would be a very passionate rant on the cult mentality of this forum and how everybody's been convinced that this is the best community ever.

I used to be active on this forum, visiting 10-20 times a day, but I maybe visit twice a month nowadays. Here are some reasons why, quoted from people from that blog post you linked to.

So, I left, which is sad, because I am an expert on the subject and have the education to back it up. "...(in group). where they group seem to conspire with the mods to put newbies down who break the slightest TOS…………even if you can tell the person didn’t know what they were doing and may have just had a bad day.

They have staff members who you can’t really tell their intentions when a properly moderated forum the staff members post along side the newbies and try to encourage conversation.

The staff their do none of the above to make a forum a better place and seem to enjoy driving i[m]perfect people away.

Like I said often times the responses are worse then whatever spam or violations the OP might have done and the mods will treat you as if you raped someone and should be put in SuperMax doing hard time:

Indeed, Mun. It got awful, then Ted made it better, and then his departure made it worse again. Still, you can't criticize them publicly, because that's a ban, and if you criticize them in PMs nothing happens. It's an amusing dead end.

Nonetheless, you mustn't forget the good things they've done. They got rid of the MLP and furry threads, and they eventually got around to banning Chobit.

Yeah, they've done a ton of good things. I just hate how the mods talk down to people. Whoever pushed the button to ban Chobit, salute.

I think they should at least take constructive criticism. Like I said, "ERMAHGRD YU MODDZZZ SUCKK!" in't very helpful, but "I think you could've closed that thread in a nicer way. Instead of insulting the user, you could've told him what he did wrong." is much better and helps them improve.

I think this forum is pretty good, I mean not perfect, sure, but what forum is? There'll always be problems. But I like to come here, it's nice, and I spend most of my time in the science labs. I don't think people are condescending even though I know a lot less than most of them, it's a nice sort of mostly personal argument free zone, I never feel angry here, and I often find myself feeling angry at people on other forums for showing massive amounts of hypocrisy, bigotry and generally jerk attitudes, as well as refusing to listen to anyone.

I consider KSP forums to be within the acceptable boundaries. Heck, if you want to see "elite" forum people with tons of post mercilessly shooting down threads with personal attacks and ad hominems included then feel free to visit http://forum.elitekingdoms.com, not to mention that - from my tenure there as a forum member - any threads posted there can devolve into a flame war since the mods don't care about it. Case in point: Check out this thread. Note the shooter's attitude and join date.

Not to mention some other forums I came through where it is allowed for the people to have a signature than can pretty much eat up a good chunk of your computer screen.

As to the original topic, Bungie.net. The games forums were filled with people complaining and the off-topic forums were filled with spammers. Lasted about 2 weeks before I jumped ship.

Bungie.net is... unique, to quantify my experience there... but that's not in a good connotation at all. All they do is flame and nag each other until the thread becomes a fight of egos, and the only really on topic and focused threads were in the most random places. Another forum you might want to check out is this:

It's not necessarily a forum, but users can post comments on articles, so you can still appreciate how poor the quality of discourse is in some parts of America. Why can't we be more like you, Canada, UK, and Australia? We suck at this. :(

Have you seen the twitter hash tags in the UK? There are a wealth of them bashing either Muslims or foreigners (Although they are mostly by racist and idiotic 12 year old kids, although not all kids are like that)... I bet if those people were gone, they would try bashing the next subset of people. Well, there's a reason I tend to stay off of most social media platforms and blogs.

Well, I guess we've all seen our share of bad websites then.

Trending hashtags are also pretty much f'd up here in PH, plagued by famewhores and some other stuff we can't comprehend. We locally call them "jeje trends".

Say hello to the forum that (apparently) tolerates racism (note the dude's large signature in comic sans). I don't know if it just went unnoticed, or whatsoever. Image grabbed from someone that reported the person in question.

Anyway, quoting from the page posted in OP (and somewhat complimenting Flymetothemun's post):

For example, someone in a forum might say that he’s had a lot of good experience with Product A to solve a specific problem mentioned in a forum. A proponent of competing Product B might come forward and accuse the other person of being stupid for using Product A, or that Product A is for morons. He won’t provide any facts to back up his argument or, if he does, the facts will be, in reality, more opinions. His purpose is not to provide useful information to other participants or even to answer the original question. His purpose is to bash Product A and the person who suggested it as a solution.

Let "Product A" be "MechJeb" and "Product B" as "Manual Flying", then throw in some other relevant stuff. I'm pretty sure you have seen these situations here before...

In addition, he was power-hungry and thought he was the be-all end-all of the Fan forum. He also couldn't take even a micron of criticism and if you did criticize he would say that you were either jealous or he would whine like a baby. I think the power (Being on top of the fan forum all the time) went to his head. On a personal note, he made me afraid to put art on there, all with his rudeness and such.

I seem to be fairly new. What happened to the MLP threads and the Furry threads, and what did chobit do?
