Is the KSP Community more friendly then the Minecraft community?

Hello all kspers!

So when I made my post in the Welcome Aboard area, I checked the post the next day and I had about 5 comments saying some very nice things. Now I have never tried anything in the Minecraft forums mostly because it seems people are only nice on mod pages. So what do you think? I do believe KSP is more friendly .

KSP Community is the friendlest I've ever, and I mean EVER seen.

The Minecraft community is just as good, however their moderators interpret the rules very broadly, so it's extremely easy to get banned (saying someones idea is crazy, even if you disprove the person's idea will get you banned... it's quite absurd).

I love the modding community here, people there are way too hung up about legal rights.

Every second post seemed to be about someone illegally using this mod or that

I haven't been involved in Minecraft's community, but I like to think that our community is nicer. I've heard people say that trolls are repelled from the community because the game isn't just something that you can jump into. While I don't think this is entirely true, I certainly think that that is a contributing factor.

There's also the fact that I'm not a fan of the minecraft forum hosting service (Curse is a curse IMO), but I definitely prefer the KSP community and I think I will for a long time to come.

Before I came here to the KSP forums I spent some time on the Minecraft forums.

And I decided to show one of my worlds I had spent a few months working on.

Guess what I got for that?

"Ewwwwww, I hate your seemingly haphazard and unplanned ramshackle of a world. I prefer high levels of planning and obvious forethought to be everywhere in my worlds which deal only in immaculate and purposeful design.

Yeah... I never liked it much either.

The KSP community will help you on anything you make, no matter how stupid it is, and never give this crud about your creations.

I'll do you one better, the KSP forums are generally better than Minecraft, Euro Truck Sim 2, and Prison Architect. All of which I've spent time reading in the last couple weeks, and all of which are being added to currently and developed. There are different weaknesses that can be encountered, all of which I don't think we suffer too much from. I think we are blessed with a great forum experience. We also have super nice people, moderators, and devs.

Minecraft - The huge established user base suffered from the same white knight/black knight issues we see occasionally in our big threads, but magnified and much more hostile from both sides. The sheer amount of forum content reminds me of the WoW forums in that there was just information overload in a given day making finding worthwhile content much harder. When people complain about our forums putting the dev's on a pedestal I just want to point at the giant marble obelisk, reaching so far into the sky you must squint to see Notch sitting atop it. He casually eats a bite from an apple, smirks, and drops the remains into the crowd below who fight to be the one to take the next bite.

Eurotruck Simulator 2 - For such a fun game and a decent size install base, the official forums are almost dead. If you want to see forums that actually get posts you have to hit up the steam forums for the game. Even the steam forums for the game only gets a handful of posts a day.

Prison Architect - If you think the various outcries over recent patches are full of people airing their grievances, you should see whenever a new alpha drops for this game. I've never seen people be quite so angry or violent, and think they might want to shiv people after playing the game.... so many people are scared of the game being ruined by the devs or worse being abandoned... we get the occasional thread that just blows up, theirs seems be to be 2-3 a week. (a fun drinking game would also be to see how many threads say the game is too expensive in an evening)

The Minecraft community was friendly before the popularity explosions (beta 1.8, 1.9/1.0, etc), but now I don't touch those forums.

On the other hand, this community is the friendliest I think I have ever seen.

KSP forums are nice on the surface but it masks an undercurrent of bitter viciousness that plays out often whenever "controversial topics" are brought up, i.e. Mechjeb, realism, or ponies; and an undercurrent of bandwagon-style egoism that tends to show itself in threads like these where people have the opportunity to degrade other communities that they know people on this forum don't favor, for a small rush of validation with regards to "their own".

I don't know about the Minecraft community, although i play the game i never got involved community-wise, but i can say the KSP community is one of the very best, and i have had happy luck because most game communities i have been a part of were a pleasure, even World of Warcraft that gets a bad press i met many good and friendly people.

Yeah, everyone here's really helpful.

Compared to minecraft community where 90% of players is below 14 it's something totally different.

EDIT: Also, the minecraft community is the reason why I stopped playing it. It killed the game for me.

I think that kind of result in this thread is almost expected from the subject line, and I agree with you. I tried to be fairly objective in my post and was just kind of waxing poetical with the imagery of the marble pedestal. He is not that bad at all.

tbh you can find that in any online community. Humans can very easily slip into an "us vs. them" mentality.

If you wish to take it that way then you can interpret my point as being that KSP forums are much the same as most other online gaming communities. To others in general, this place is not better than "those little 14 year old ****s who make up the broad majority of the Minecraft forums" precisely because of the people who scapegoat them in this way, and this kind of comment is especially inane considering the fair number of people below the age of fifteen this forum plays host to itself.

I play Minecraft. I almost never touch the forums or any other site except the wiki. There's a lot of "nooby" guys on minecraft. Go on any large server and there's always a few people begging for diamonds. If I play Minecraft, its on my friends server where we all know each other. Beside a good amount of the MC community will troll, grief, laugh at, or otherwise treat you like dirt, just because they played longer than you. And their unrealistic space mods *cough* galacticraft *cough* really annoy me. I mean really, flying 400 blocks up with NO OXIDIZER gets you into orbit! Screw Logic!

Minecraft is one of those games where you require almost no knowledge and you can just jump in the game at any age to play. Many little kids and not many mature people overall joined that forum (from what I remember from my experience). But on Kerbal Space Program, a little kid (probably) couldn't get to the Mun no matter how much he tried (unless he was smart and watch Scott Manley all day ). Also, astronomers will be more attracted to this game, so older (usually more mature) people will be playing this game. That's just my opinion. I believe KSP community is more friendly and mature than the Minecraft community.

The only other forums I've ever joined are one for a rail simulator game (which was pretty much dead), and for Simcity 4, but that was mostly to get mods.

There was some awesome stuff on there, but I never really posted much.

These forums are pretty cool. Come on here, and people talk about space stuff, and share stuff from this very cool game.

I run a small minecraft server privately for a few friends. I'll say that we run FTB Ultimate, and that our last "factory" was powered by a nuclear reactor and some steam turbines.

Yes, really.

The reactor is self-contained, if the steam is at full pressure it will cease reactions to save fuel (and be safe) but below a certain pressure it engages. If it ever gets too hot, it shuts down.

The breeder reactor (for re-enriching depleted fuel) is in a safe location far away, and is controlled by a lua script that I wrote

It's all about how you play, with that game.

(those wires on the ceiling? alarm system. If the main battery drains, the alarm goes off to attract your attention before everything grinds to a halt)
