Linux performance, FPS

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow Kerbonauts

I have noticed that KSP performance under Linux is somehow lower than under Windows (Win7). Obviously, the primal suspect is graphic card drivers (I have nVidia), but before I jump to conclusions, I'd like to see some numbers in form of FPS to support this claim. It is easy to use applications like Fraps under Windows, but I haven't found any way to show FPS under Linux, should that be using debug menu (I'm pretty sure that is not possible), using 3rd party tool or even making Unity to show FPS somehow.

Does anybody know how to show FPS in Linux?

Also, I have mentioned drivers. I'm currently using version 304.88 from March 2013, I know there is a newer version made by nVidia, but not sure if it's worth it.I have some bad memories regarding updating drivers.

Does anyone have experience with KSP in Linux and if updating drivers have any impact on performance?

Have you seen this thread? KSP tends to be CPU limited, rather than graphics limited. Even if you can't find a FPS counter, you could try the test from that thread and compare your time to stage 5 to see if the Linux game implementation is slower than the windows version.

I have seen the thread. That's actually one of the reasons I've asked. I wish to perform the test, but without means to objectively messure the outcome, all I'm left with is a subjective feeling (e.q. "This runs kinda smoothly", "This is somehow laggy", "A slow slideshow" etc)

As long as you aren't using the Nouveau drivers, you're probably okay. With the Nouveau drivers (on CentOS 6.4), the game was so slow it would crash prior to loading more often than not; with the proprietary drivers it runs fine.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
