Higher time warp and hibernation instead of magic, unrealistic "warp drive o.O".

Recommended Posts

The probablem with FTL travel(I hate the idea of warp drives) is we don't know how todo it yet we got a theory but how to make it happen is out of the question.

For a game, that is not a problem.

Second problem is that its not in the spirit of KSP warp drives

Squad might agree, depending how you think warp drive travel would work out in practice in the game. But Squad does intent to implement a way to travel between stars in a way that takes less than several real-time days running the game on max timewarp (it actually is already in the game code but it is broken).

That does not mean Squad wants the "magical warp drive" that the Op complains about. Interstellar travel would take several months or years of game-time.

If you'd read this thread you'll find there are several ways to have a go-really-fast-engine that does not make it to easy.

there are several ways to have a go-really-fast-engine that does not make it too easy.

Like a nerfed warp drive.

Ex:

Exotic matter: requires massive energy/rare materials to be produced, making it 'expensive'.

Massive energy requirement: would make an ion drive look like an LED in comparison.

Picky situation: warp drives don't agree with being deep in a planets'/moons'/stars' gravity well. If you decide to go against this, the engine will either explode or not work.

A hop, skip and a jump: can only go so far on an electric charge.

No brakes: warp drive goes until it runs out of fuel/charge or reaches the end of specified jump distance. Ship doesn't except input while warping.

More mass=MOAR BOOSTERS:If the ship has too much mass, you either need to upgrade the warp drive or add another one.

IMHO, this makes the warp drive a much more balanced option for interstellar travel.

Today's Necro :D (As It is still a majority wanted feature I guess)

I like the idea of make the hybernation (as well as a (at least minimalistic) life support) into the stock game.

On the other hand If the hybernation technology lands in the mid-techtree a "warpdrive/alcumbieredrive or both" should be also included at the very end of that tree.

Anyway As far as I know that thing is in the NoSuggest category. Or just "faster than light" travel is there?

Because if "teleportation" is available I'd like something to do with it too like a buildable stargate system? (But only the huge "must be assembled" space gates for XXXXXL extremely large colonization carriers) :D

OH-oh...

I just re read again the "what not to suggest" I can see there everything which has a "superb mod" is listed there...

But I do think they should REALLY be stock/optimised/eleminated the incompatibilities/reformed in style to mach the Vanila, maybe rethink a bit ... and such.

I'm actually a big fan of interstellar travel and warp drives. I would love to see a stock implementation somewhere along the lines of what HarvesteR mentioned a long, long time ago (and probably doesn't remember).

However, I do believe the scope is more in line with an expansion pack than the base game. What an expansion it would be, though!
