SSTM - Single Stage to Mün

About the challange:

I'd like to see space plane, that will be able to reach the Mun (or other celestial body for greater challange) and come back with single stage.

Rulers:

  1. You can't use MechJeb or any auto-pilot mod.
  2. You can use Kethane if you want to go beyond Minimus.
  3. Your space craft cant be unmanned
  4. You need to land on any celestial body (except of Kerbin).
  5. You need to get your plane back on Kerbin.
  6. You need to tell me if you used any mods.
  7. Send me some pictures or video.

Rewards:

  • My respect.
  • Nothing else for now.

Good luck!!!

First, there must be a way to win a challenge. Examples for this topic would be lowest mass, highest mass (ha), most kerbals on board, least jet fuel burned, you get the idea. Second, this isn't all that hard with intake abuse. I've gone to laythe and back on a single stage.

Single stage to the Mun? I've done it before, but I've got a new ship I want to put through her paces, so why not! Behold the Vethrfolnir!

Jeb designed this one to be his new runabout, but he was on Eve when KSC finally gave the go ahead to build it so Bob wound up taking the maiden flight.

Hi Bob! You look unhappy. Don't care to fly something Jeb desgined?

2Mun1_Transfer_zpsc9274967.png

Hmmm... 47km; a little low to start my Hohmann transfer, but the geometry is right so why not!

2Mun1_CloseShave_zps6285661e.png

And inbound to the Mun; cutting it a little close here.

2Mun1_MunLand_zps605bab31.png

No worries; Bob may not be Jeb, but he's still a Kerbmonaut! Landed safe and sound.

2Mun1_Yeehaw_zps03b50ecf.png

And off again. The problem with horizontal takeoff vehicles is that the only way to get them off the Mun is to go crater jumping. Then again, that was probably what Jeb was planning on when he designed the thing in the first place.

And back to Kerbin.

Hmmm... you know... there's still an awful lot of fuel left in the tank. Why don't we go again?

2Mun2_StraightUp_zpsb527fa53.png

Straighten up and fly right!

A little short on fuel; going to have to use a trick I came up with a while back.

2Mun2_GravityBreak1_zps7e895da2.png

One gravity assist...

2Mun2_GravityBreak2_zps7da2f744.png

Not your normal Mun intercept trajectory.

2Mun2_MunLanding_zpsaafd613a.png

And landed again; 1km/s delta-v left; just enough!

2Mun2_TargetAcquired_zpse32a49cd.png

Target acquired! Also, crater surfing!

2Mun2_FamiliarSight_zpsb77e4a69.png

A familiar sight...

Home sweet home.

Here's a set of two attempts from ages ago ( 0.19 I think ), there & back again without refuelling. Not entirely sure what's in there other than FAR, I believe Firesplitter cabins & Taverius aero wings and the first plane had DR hinges for wingtips and took quite some testing to set up. Sadly that one fell apart re-entering Kerbin, so hence the second run ( the one with fixed wings ).

With the stuff that's arrived since then it's a doddle.
