This thread will contain calculations of a program called KSPTOT by Arrowstar. These calculations include various flybys in purpose of gravity assits or free-return-trajectories to shorten mission times, get a closer view on another planet or simply to save fuel. This post will be completed over time.

Cool stuff, I'm thinking of trying to conduct an Apollo Venus Flyby type mission using Nova's new wet workshop mod, and this is really helpful. I had been having a hard time trying to figure out how to manage the free return trajectory.
I wouldn't attempt free-return flights to other planets until you can get one with the Mun and minmus. Your aim is to get your periapsis on the "dark" side of your destination, this will require a longer burn than normal so this is where the maneuver planner becomes your best friend so be sure to use it.

For the mun you want to aim for a Kerbin periapsis after Mun escape of about 30 km. The best way is to plan a munar injection burn as though you plan to crash into the mun as soon as possible then add more prograde delta-v and watch the conics. Once you get the right kerbin periapsis after Mun escape stop adding prograde delta-v. After executing the burn you should now be on a free-return trajectory so just sit back and let Newton get you back to Kerbin safely and then curse that you forgot the [CENSORED] parachutes again!

Cool stuff, I'm thinking of trying to conduct an Apollo Venus Flyby type mission using Nova's new wet workshop mod, and this is really helpful. I had been having a hard time trying to figure out how to manage the free return trajectory.

Wait what's this, wet workshop? Details or linky please! Can't find anything useful with a search here or at spaceport.

I didn't fully understand this... but I did manage to pull off an Eve flyby using it. I had no way to know what the angle of the initial burn was supposed to be, but I got close enough to make it work. I did have to make a correction in order to intercept Kerbin afterward though, but it wasn't very big.

You mean the launch orbit? No, it's circular, 0° inclination and 75km altitude. The flyby orbit is retrograde indeed, they're all retrograde.

I use a similar method for getting back to Kerbin from Mun and Minmus missions, basically I barely escape their gravity well, then do a calculated burn to get my apoapsis down to about 1.2 mil, then at apoapsis burn retrograde until my periapsis is as close to 40 km as I can get it, meaning I get air braking as well as making it back to Kerbin with about 1/2 the fuel reserved for the landers

Have you seen my Flyby Finder?

TOT gives more details of an individual flyby (I particularly like the orbit diagrams), and it allows for a thrust during the flyby, but FF shows what's possible over a wide area.

I'd never seen that 150-or-so-day free return Kerbin-Duna-Kerbin path before, that is cool.
