Your Blender/Maya/3dMax/etc fan art section (Animation,Pics, etc)

OH also,

Your kerbal model looks pretty good,

just one small problem.

The eyes look more like bumps on the head rather than separate spheres.

might want to change that if you want to do some animating or posing with the eyes.

Yes, definitely! The eyes are indeed spheres of their own, but they look extremely weird without some kind of eyelids. I was trying to improve the basic bug-eyed look they usually have in-game.

I've run into a problem at this point, though. I spent a lot of time standardizing the mesh. I had a lot of tris and quads scattered around the thing, so I set about smoothing things about and simplifying the geometry to make it easier to make fine adjustments. I did this with half the body, using a mirror modifier. After all was done to satisfaction, I applied the modifier and began the bone rigging process. To my horror, upon testing the rig, a section of his stomach seemed to be "stuck" in space, refusing to attach to the rig, even after I'd added some weight paint to that section. It's as if that portion of the mesh is sitting outside of the rig for some reason, even though it's all ostensibly part of the same object.

I've done so much micro-editing to this thing using so many different methods I've been learning through tutorials, I may end up having to go back and commit a massive do-over in an attempt to correct whatever weird bug has decided to introduce itself to the model. Blender can be such a royal pain in the butt sometimes. Much better (and more approachable) than it used to be, by far, but it still seems rather confused about the whole notion of UI standards. At this rate, instead of the "E" key being the first to start fading on my keyboard, it's going to be Ctrl and Z instead. O_o

I discovered that you can use the de-saturate topographic maps from ISA map-sat to create bump and/or displacement maps for celestial bodies.

My attempt:

Or you can get full res textures from here:

Also tune down the specularity on Duna. It looks like plastic right now. :)

Yeah I had that problem with my kerbin model too but found out that it was the spec that caused it to look plastic

Simple solution.

Paint it in a metal based paint.

PS. Sorry mods if this seems like a necro, i just need this thread to be around for about 2 more days, so i can post a project i'm working on.

Me and TheAquired are starting off our project and here's a preview of a cycles render of the first scene

<img snip>

That looks pretty neat!

So how do you get only the middle part in focus?

i'm having some trouble getting specific things to shift in and out of focus.

I used cycles to render.

to focus on the center, make an empty and position it where you want to focus. Then set the camera to focus on the empty

You can mess around with the settings till you get what you want

Here's where I've gotten so far today with my model.

RP9OPJ4.png

Got my feet wet with UV unwrapping and texturing, and now I'm regretting not having made the body and suit as separate meshes. Either I'm going to have to take it apart, or figure out how to texture that big honking (complex) model!

WANT!!! when its done can i have it too?? you'll get credit of course!!

Well, it may be a little bit yet before it's done. I'm working on versions of it with and without the suit, and I'm currently having trouble with the rigging portion of it as well. From there, it's the nightmare of texturing that will keep me up late at night. :/

no offense taken, starmade is one of my bigger inspirations for this animation :)

Ah, i see

Isn't that kind of complimentary though? I mean Starmade was obviously inspired in part by Minecraft with the whole voxel building blocks system.

Well, because I have learned that people some times get offended easily,

so it doesn't hurt to add it.

On a side note, i just made a video animation, but i made a separate thread for it, so people can find it easily.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
