[SHOWCASE] Bring out your LANDERS!!

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty green compared to other people on this forum, but here's what I use for trips to the mun, I don't have a screencap of it one the mun, but here it is parked on the launch pad:

It's got enough fuel to be able to land on the mun even if I miss on the mun and have to come around for another try. Yes, I did mess up with the time acceleration if you were wondering hehe. I'm very pleased with the lift and launch stage too, those two stages combined has proven to be a decent workhorse, works very well for putting relatively heavy ships or station modules into orbit and beyond.

Here it is mounted onto the lift and orbit stage:

@ Foxster: nice engines dude

Here's my A.P.E lander, main engine is a 48 -7s, the frame has the best handling I've ever built for this type of vehicle (still WIP)

There will be a supercharged version with 5 ION engines instead of 1 at release (placed where the sensor array nose cone currently are).

My Kegel program continues. I've decided to back up a bit and learn to fly a VTOL thing, like, at all before I try to actually build a whole base with one. So the Kegel 3.5, which uses jet engines, is my "Kerbin lander". Once I get my feet under me, I'll adapt it to Münar conditions, and then other planets.

You'll notice a heavy Cupcake influence here. Cupcake's designs really helped me figure out how to keep the thing balanced.

Joshua, how do you get the overview cockpit to work? When I try to use it there is no kerbal pilot avatar and its like there is no cockpit at all at the launchpad...

I would like to introduce my Standard Lander 2. SL2 has been in development since .24, and has undergone many tweaks and upgrades during that time. It has landed on and returned from Moho, Gilly, the Mun, Minmus, Ike, Dres, Bop, Pol, and Eeloo. I believe it would be able to land on and return from Vall, but I haven't tested it. On the smallest moons (Minmus, especially) it has enough dv to make several suborbital hops before returning to orbit. The current version, SL2-400, incorporates several new design improvements, including updated fuel line placement, installation of a probe core, and upgrade of the power generation system.

It was specifically engineered to be able to take off and make Munar orbit on RCS alone. Thus, it has 25 linear RCS ports on the central fuel tank, along with three standard RCS quads. It also features two linear RCS ports on each engine set that are specially placed to assist with rotation for easier docking alignment.

It carries three goo pods, a materials bay, a thermometer, a gravioli detector, and a seismometer. Main power is from an embedded RTG, although it has two solar panels as supplemental or emergency backup. It carries three whip antennas for transmitting data. It was designed to operate with MechJeb, although I've removed MJ from the .craft file for this download so that it's all stock. It also features an advanced probe core, allowing it to operate autonomously -- perfect for rescue missions or for testing it in situations deemed too dangerous for Kerbals.

Also included is a simple (if somewhat overpowered) launcher that can get it from the launchpad to Munar orbit. If flown well, it can even get you into Minmus orbit. I designed it to meet up with and refuel my CSM modules in LKO before sending them elsewhere. Of course you can replace it with your own launcher, or even remove it entirely.

Here's one final shot of an older version in action:

And finally, here is the (100% stock) .craft file for your enjoyment: Google Drive

Also, if the original Mun Lander is too pricey/advanced, there's this, the Cheap-o V, ready to take you munward for a fraction of a billion dollars.zmI6rZ2.png

While pictures of it landing in the day side of the Mun do not exist yet, it has been thoroughly tested and can reach the Mun, turn around and go home, without refueling once.

My computer would literally explode if I tried to run that!!!!!!:(

I made another large enough that I have to launch it from the runway. It starts with 2517 parts. It was my first attempt for the Mother Ship Challenge:

I need more struts, but I don't know haw many more parts I can add before my computer blows up.

If interested:
