How can I land on Duna in this case with as small as possible fuel?

Recommended Posts

Refueling ship incoming!

I don't know why I did it,but I decided to land on duna.Without any calculations,or waiting kerbin and duna to get into correct possitions. >.<

So I've managed to get into dunas SOI,but I'm on escape velocity now ._.

I tried aerobraking (couldn't reach altitude to aerobrake),making an orbit by burning retrograde, always ran out of fuel (glad there's a button called F9).

I'll post some pictures here. And if someone has any ideas how do I land on Duna or/and go back...I'll be very, hmm Thankful and happy

Here are the pictures. I don't know all the parts names,so sorry for it

By the way,If there's possible to make ~150000m or bigger orbit,I can undock and land with lander, and later dock again.(docking is not a problem for me)

If even from your earliest save you cannot get a good aerobreaking position to get into an orbit with help of thrusters - not even a decaying orbit to make an emergency landing to be rescued by another team - try to sling around Duna and burn for an encounter with Kerbin to abort the mission.

Kerbals before mission!

There don't seem to be any solution but I can tell you how to avoid doing the same mistake.

You have to affine your trajectory the further away from your destination as possible. By that I mean that you should have been going for a <300km away periapsis half-way from Kerbin to Duna.

Or even an aerobraking path as you are low on fuel. Now any maneuver will ask for way to much deltaV

And I doubt you would be able to land then launch from duna again with this design.

ps: you need a lot of parachute for Duna and usually you just land with the engine.

I can make an orbit but with using ALL of fuel that i have (yep, with landers fuel)

I was thinking about going home, but then I thought some people who are good at maths, can invent something :/

Not that good at math, but if you ditch the orange tank/poodle portion as soon as it is empty, the lander alone should easily be able to make orbit, possibly with enough left to land, though it may be a better idea to send a refueling mission instead

Try burning RAD- ("downwards") to lower your periapsis into the atmosphere, although with how close you are to periapsis, I'm not sure how well it will work. You can try to skip that encounter and get another one, but once you do get one, make sure you lower your periapsis well before you enter Duna's SOI. Just mess around with the maneuver nodes until your Duna periapsis is around 11 km, and then you can make some small corrections once you enter Duna's SOI.
