Small fuel to orbit challenge

Recommended Posts

Stole my next idea Hejnfelt :sticktongue:, but yeah if you're allowed to take only liquid(jet) fuel as your payload you will crush anyone who attempts to bring regular fuel/oxidizer tanks with them... so maybe this needs to be re-worked to include oxidizer or do separate totals for people just sending jet fuel and people sending liquid/oxidizer tanks... idk

Hejnfelt, I guess you didn't read post #8 where it was discussed about the spirit of the challenge and the back story. But, congrats it put you into 1st place. It does put a damper on the challenge when we all now have to resort to doing what you did in order to compete. And thus ruining the reason to put fuel into space in the first place. I guess it could be used for refueling space planes for the jet use only.

Hmm I thought I read through all the posts. But why don't you just edit your original post and create a new category that includes oxidizer?

I didn't want to change the rules after the challenge had already started because others might have already started making crafts.

No big deal, you followed the rules, it's just that all the contestants will now have to go by the letter of the rules else they won't get good scores. Here is my last attempt...

That's 1993 / 7560 X 100 = 26.4%

That's gonna be my last attempt.

capi3101, good job on the attempt. You didn't add the Solid fuel, but I'll adjust for ya. 7,768/68,464 = 11.3%. The reason your 64 units of solid fuel isn't counted in your final picture, is because it can't go through the docking port for offloading if needed. I wasn't real clear on that in the instructions, but that's basically what we're after. Fuel to be transported to space for later use.

Ah. So putting those Seperatrons on the central ascent stage worked to my detriment, especially since I didn't use them. Okay...well, eleven-thousandths of a percentage point isn't too bad of a difference, particularly if we're still staying within one significant digit.

EDIT: Hang on a tick...I can transfer liquid fuel through a decoupler by enabling crossfeed last I checked (if that's not the case, my score is even lower than it was). Which means I can get the liquid fuel from the ascent stage to a different craft via the docking port. Which means once that's done, the solid fuel Sepratrons could be used to de-orbit the ascent stage later (for later use). Thus they should count: (7,768+64)/68,464 = 7,832/68,464 = 11.440%.......eh. I'm not gonna quibble over a tenth of a percentage point; I might if it meant I would gain or lose a spot, but I'm not in this case.

Oh by the way capi3101, I really like all those pictures you provided for each stage. It shows a good and proper flight path to orbit which really can effect your performance in this challenge. I've noticed it's real close to my flight path too. I wonder if all our paths will be very similar? Is it the most efficient for this challenge or just most efficient for rockets in general?

Most folks use the 090 gravity turn to get a little bit of extra oomph from Kerbin's rotation in general. It doesn't amount to much, but it can make a difference. I imagine most of ascent paths are similar...

26.4% on a non-asparagus lifter? Holy crap......

Bowing out of this challenge, seems silly to not count oxidizer as fuel at launch and in orbit since it has mass and i presume the point of this was to see who could create the most fuel (and mass) efficient craft with no fuel lines/jets.... dumping oxidizer pre-launch or only launching jet fuel is pretty pointless from a practicality standpoint. In "practical/useful" craft like the original submissions, counting oxidizer as fuel will yes, bring your percentage up a little, however in the "stoop to low levels" craft counting oxidizer will cripple your score, and yet counting it is more realistic from a total mass/payload to orbit standpoint, which I believe was intended more to be in the spirit of the challenge...

sweetpezak, I agree with you 100%. But I had already started the challenge and changing the rules mid-stream is also against my grain. Since we had one contestant go down that path, we all have to in order to compete. If I had it to do all over again, I'd do the way you just mentioned. Hind sight is 20/20.

Perhaps someone will start a new challenge and set the rules right this time.

Well, i suck at building ultra-efficient rockets, well done Bothersome! However, here is my take at the challenge for a whopping 26.1% score (408/1560) with some clever rules interpretation:

replacing the one unused FT-200 tank with a slightly lighter Mk1 fuselage would have given me 60 more scoring fuel for 30% efficiency.

No, jets are not allowed. ihtoit saw the words you posted "jet fuel launcher" and automatically assumed you had jets on your craft. I don't see any jets used on your craft, so you get credit for it.

Good job by the way.

I wonder why do kerbals need so much jet fuel in orbit...
